This is a great book for anyone learning the latest fad—making cocktails. Super easy to use and it will forever have a place of reference in my home bar. Murphy does a great job of giving alternative mixes to popular drinks such as a Bloody Mary can be a Bloody Maria when vodka is replaced with tequila. However I have one criticism when Murphy failed to mention one of Wisconsin's favorite cocktails consumed every Friday night at fish fries across the entire state—The Brandy Old Fashioned. Most Cheese Heads prefer their Old Fashions with brandy not bourbon and they either like them sweet (with 7up) or sour (with Squirt).

This is a fantastic visual directory of mixed drinks that will turn even the least experienced bartender into a pro in no time. With vibrant colors and easy-to-follow diagrams, learning a few new drinks took me no time at all. I borrowed this from the library, but I may add it to my personal collection.

Each drink recipe is broken down into short text/diagram sections that note the cocktail pronunciation, the cocktail "snapshot", ingredients, description, best occasion for drinking, time required, proportions, calories, and text/visual instructions. There is also a guide to bar essentials, a guide to popular spirits, and a color-coded index broken down by name and calorie count per drink. This is the D.I.Y. guide to mixology, for beginners through pros! Review: I may not imbibe any alcoholic beverages myself, but there are plenty of people who enjoy a cocktail or a relaxing mixed drink, so I definitely see the allure of a book like this one. The book format is great, with full-color photos, illustrations, and diagrams, paired with concise text instructions. I like how Brian D. Murphy separated drink types based on what types of spirits were being used, and then alphabetically; this made it very easy to find specific drinks without having to constantly flip through the sections - as did the two indexes. And, according to my family, the drinks are quite good, especially the Dark & Stormy! I only wish that there had been a few more basic drinks, because I noticed that there was a large amount of ingredients that a home bar wouldn't necessarily stock; but with a little time and effort, one could mix a drink at a time until they have everything they need to prepare every drink in the book - and there are a lot. This book will have any person, no matter the experience, mixing and creating drinks like a pro mixologist. I recommend this book to adults (21+) who want to improve their mixing skills and serve up some awesome drinks. Rating: On the Run (4.5/5) *** I received this book from the publisher (Little, Brown and Company) in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

See Mix Drink arrives just in time for the holiday party season. A new concept in cocktail guide books, it uses an illustrated format with easy to follow graphic instructions on how to make 100 of the most popular mixed drinks. Click the browse inside this book button above to see for yourself. There is a short introduction and a how-to on using the book, what tools and glassware a well equipped bar should contain, plus a description of the most common spirits and a color coded chart for easy identification when using the instruction portion of the book. There is also a handy alphabetical index at the end for quick drink look-ups. The bulk of the book contains the drink making instructions. Each drink is presented on two pages, beautifully laid out using color photos, graphics and charts. In addition to the basic instructions the author also provides a brief history of the drink, interesting factoids, how to phonetically pronounce the name, time required to prepare, calorie content and a photo of the finished drink. The book itself is a handsome hardcover volume with a water-resistant cover. There is no dust jacket; the cover photo is printed right on the book. This is a great idea and I would like all recipe and drink books to be made this way. I dislike ruining the pretty dust cover on my recipe books, and so often in a busy kitchen accidents happen. Newbies just learning to mix drinks, experienced bartenders and those somewhere in between will all find this a helpful guide to creating some of the most popular cocktails.

I received this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. The book is so well-done, anyone with or without experience in mixing up drinks will be able to easily. The book is divided by spirits (which is helpful in case you only have one on hand), and within each section, organized alphabetically. The pages on the drink themselves are great for people who love diagrams and charts. You can see a picture of the drink, read a description of it, along with the instructions, ingredients and a chart of how I received this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway. Bonus: they give the proportions and a breakdown of the calories. It's really quite simple with all of the illustrations, but not overwhelming. The index is lovely as well for a quick look-up of a drink. All in all, this book is great for anyone who is just starting out and will probably give ideas for those who already know a thing or two.

This is a really good book to get started mixing drinks, but it could definitely be improved. The most important change would be including an index for the secondary ingredients. I want to be able to say "I have vodka, lemon juice, pineapple juice, triple sec, and angostura bitters. What can I do with these limited ingredients?" Being able to answer that in a convenient, quick way is certainly difficult, but not at all impossible. I must say when I saw this in Bookpages, I thought the concept of this book was kind of goofy. The book is kind of laid out in a simpleton kind of fashion with each drink being broken down into a step by step process. I saw it at the library, took a look at it and, actually, the book is extremely cool. At least 80% of the book were recipes that I was unfamiliar with and I consider myself to be a pretty good mixologist! This will actually be a book I purchase because of its' unusualness. I got this book as a Goodreads giveaway and it met and surpassed my expectations. This is a mixology book that takes popular mixed drinks and gives you more than just a set of proportions. Each drink has a 2 page spread telling you not only the recipe but also what kind of glass should be used, calorie count and how it should be mixed...shaken or stirred! A great primer on mixed drinks, really enjoyed it!

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I sat one night and mixed Tequila Sunrise's, and they were phenomenal! (My mixed drinks) It covers your basic liquors, and shows the average person how to mix a decent drink properly. Very use to use guides with illustrations and exact measurements.
