The Art of the Mass Effect Universe is a gorgeous compendium of concept art for the complete Mass Effect trilogy, an ambitious video game series where a player's decisions have drastic ramifications that span the length of the entire trilogy. Mass Effect is more than just a video game - it has become a place filled with the memories of friendships, rivalries, wondrous visions, and thrilling adventures. The book opens with stunning illustrations of Commander Shepard in both his male and variant female form, portrayed in full armor with backdrops of brooding blues and biotic orange. The origin and concept design of every race is included: the mystical and sensually beautiful asari; turians with their avian-like silhouettte and carapace to shield them from radiation on their home planet; the semi-reptilian krogan, ever warring and riddled with testosterone; salarians with their sleek figure and large, intelligent eyes; quarians, tantalizing and mysterious behind their masks; the insectoid protheans; and the lithe drell, to say nothing of the elcor, volus, geth, praetorians, and rachni. Also included are concept sketches and full color illustrations of cities - highlighting the smooth curves and horizontal lines typical of the Mass Effect style - as well as aircrafts, vehicles, technology, planets and locales, weapons, and armor suitable for fighting in the biggest war ever seen in the galaxy against a seemingly unstoppable foe. When conceptualizing the Mass Effect universe, we kept a few artists and architects in mind. We drew inspiration from Syd Mead, John Harris, John Berkey, and Santiago Calatrava - just a few of the visual mavericks we looked to. Packed with concept art and minimal commentary, this colorful collection will inspire artists, intrigue lovers of science fiction, and warm the hearts of Mass Effect fans.

I'm a bit sad that there is only about half a page out of 184 with FemShep. She is a gaming icon! (At least for those of us who chose her as a protagonist). Well, of course I was going to love this, because I love the Mass Effect series and I love concept art. It's always fascinating and inspiring to see the incredible breadth of ideas that artists explored before settling on a final vision. Absolutely fantastic. So incredible to see the concept art for characters, races, and areas and realize how vastly different things could have looked in the series. Just makes me even more excited for Andromeda. Highly recommended for any Mass Effect fans (especially those as rabid as myself).

I started playing the games about a month ago, mostly out of curiosity. Before you know it, I was clocking more hours played than I was actually getting in sleep per day, and that's with a full time job and family. I completed the trilogy (game) just this morning and now I am ruined. No other game will ever measure up. When my daughter saw how obsessed I was with the game, she surprised me with this book. What a fantastic gift and definitely one that I will cherish. It details how each character I started playing the games about a month ago, mostly out of curiosity. What a fantastic gift and definitely one that I will cherish. It details how each character was created and offers a little background into the creative process that went into creating the Mass Effect Universe. Because I'm not yet prepared to give up this tale, I have submerged myself in the comics, the first novel and a failed attempt (already) at finding another game that matches up, even a bit, to this. Believe me there is nothing. The artwork is superb and it is awesome to get the chance to learn the inspiration behind each race, and my favorite characters.

Love Mass Effect!! When I played the games I couldn't help thinking the graphics were so awesome. That the aliens looked cool, the planets were amazingly done, and the setting for the storylines rocked. Then I read this book and realized what it actually took to come up with the graphics and design. To the player it looks cool but to make it look that way the artists thought of every detail. This book shows original concepts, variety of graphic permutations and possibilities that it took to come up with the final product, and a look at the details like making the armor style match the home world architecture (sounds logical but I never thought of it that way before). My favorite was the creation of Jack, including an enlarged assortment of her tattoos (yay!). This book goes through the original Mass Effect, ME2, and ME3. It has some beautiful full page illustrations as well as smaller concepts and even initial rough sketches. Beautifully done, huge book, high quality, great coffee table topper. Its a must have for any Mass Effect fan!

A great read for fans of the series or anyone interested in video game art. It covers all 3 games and shares concept art from all areas of the game including characters, environments, enemies and weapons. The text also adds additional details of the thought process behind the art and was overall very informative and visually engaging

Designing something from scratch sure takes a lot of effort. Making something unique, believable and cool takes skill and many iterations. It's interesting to see the many changes that each race and character went through before the finished design. While I expect that this long process is present in most original creations, it's still impressive to see it for a complex universe like the one in Mass Effect. (More pictures on my blog) The first Mass Effect art book was quite good. The Art of Mass Effect Universe is even better. This handsome 184-page hardcover art book covers art for Mass Effect 1, 2 and 3. Yes, you'll be able to get a sneak peek at the upcoming Mass Effect 3, that's if you don't mind a little spoiler. The art is top notch, the environment paintings are spectacular. There's some overlap of content with the first art book that features the first game. Here, there are additional content which makes you wonder why they weren't in the earlier book. Anyway, the first art book is already out of print so it makes more sense to get just this one. As all the designs come with insightful commentary, there will be a bit of a spoiler when you're reading the last chapter on Mass Effect 3. If you're just looking at pictures, then it should be alright and it'll give you a nice idea of what to expect visually in the next game. Unfortunately for a book this good, the artists aren't credited, not even with a page on the list of names like they did in the first art book. In many instances, I wanted to find out who these artists are and their websites. This is a silly exclusion, a downer. Overall. this is a great art book for fans of the game and sci-fi art. It should be one of the top art books for 2012.

I'm not sure that one can so much 'read' an art book as simply gawp at each page, sometimes with envy thinking "I wish I had even half the talent!". If I didn't have so much respect for books, I'd think I'd rip this apart to get the pictures out and frame them. I missed out getting the art book when Mass Effect was first released and I can even remember thinking "Must get that some day" but I never did. The good thing about this book is that it includes artwork from all three games. Not only did I find it interesting to see the concept work and the works that didn't quite make the cut but it's also good to see what is in the game. It's a little hard to examine a brute in game when it's trying to pound you into the ground or examine the architecture of Thessia when you have Reaper forces trying to stop you! Whilst this book doesn't add or take away anything to the enjoyment of the game itself, it does make me appreciate the effort of what went into a gorgeous game (even if the first is starting to look a little dated compared to the last). For instance, everything has an art asset including Shepard, the armour, weapons, ships even down to Jack's tattoos. Outside of fans of the game, I can probably see this appealing to those interested in sci-fi art.

"Art of The Mass Effect Universe" provides a stunning look into the character design, atmospheric structuring, and look of the popular Bioware game series. I'm a late fan of Mass Effect, having played the first game and steadily catching up with the series, but this is an excellent book for collectors and fans of the series to take up, even those who are just starting. I really loved seeing the setting design of places like The Citadel and Virmire, and I appreciated the background on how the designers did clothing and accessories for each of the different races. I'm in awe of the talent these artists have portrayed the world and races in these games. I do wish it were a little longer and included more commentary/insight into some of the characters, but I can't complain of the high quality work that I've seen here. I would definitely add it to my collection. Note: I received this as an ARC from NetGalley, from the publisher Dark Horse.

This is a really outstanding art book and definitely one of the best video game ones I've owned. The art is all digital here, but there is a lot of character and location designs. The character designs are definitely expected out of any art book, but they are all very strong. The insight into why they were designed a certain way is excellent. The environment shots are incredible and the insight around each planet's design was equally excellent. This book also covers all three Mass Effect games in just about the right amount of detail. The production quality is excellent and yet, the book is still reasonably priced. Finally, this may sound silly but I love how thick the pages are and that I never feel like I'm going to damage them when looking through the book. There are definitely some art books where you cannot make this claim. Overall, this is a must own for Mass Effect fans. Anybody who wants to see modern Sci-Fi art designs should also give this book a try.

There's a lot of good stuff here but I admit I'm a bit disappointed. 182 pages is just not enough room for concept art for all three games! Maybe I'm just doing it a disservice by comparing it to the epic The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. That book is a gold standard for these concept art books but it sets the bar really, really high. For ME1 in particular there are a lot of unused concepts or variations on concepts but I just know there had to be more than this! What is there is also often rather small and hard to appreciate the details on. The accompanying text has a few errors and generally doesn't have a lot of really interesting behind-the-scenes insights to offer. Additionally, and I can't complain about it too much (because it is art of the Mass Effect Universe), there's also a lot of promotional art in here (particularly for ME2), which is already readily available online. Still, those complaints aside, there's some really great stuff in here and some interesting unused details. It's well worth picking up (or at least checking out) for any Mass Effect fan.

One of my favorite games. Also that team is awesome. Love the cover. This was pretty good. Everything in the book is really good, from the character designs, art style for the different backgrounds as you see the different games and characters in the book as well. Really good read.

Iconic work - but the game itself feels more immersive than the concept art book ... not a great feeling. Needed a lot more 'why's, wrong directions, more about the levels, and less crass comments. Iconic work - but the game itself feels more immersive than the concept art book ... not a great feeling.
