A fascinating biography of the 19th (and very early 20th) century English woman traveler, indefatigable and energetic. Kaye's biography shows what Isabella really thought of the religious beliefs she encountered that were different from her own, but her own works faithfully described them without much personal judgement. She endured much hardship on her travels, but while reading the book, I kept thinking that the animals -- horse, mule, etc. -- often endured as much or more than she did! I also wish that Kaye had included maps that traced her travels: one from her own time, and one modern map since some of the political geography has of course changed. But on the whole, this book is well worth the read.

Isabella Bird had some amazing adventures. I think the book could have been more interesting because the things she did should have been more exciting. It felt like more of a text book, still interesting, just not captivating the way I'd hoped. Isabella Bird had some amazing adventures. Isabella Bird was definitely a woman ahead of her time-She must have been one of the first travel writers and definitely one of the first women to do so-I loved her stories of traveling the world of the 1800’s and her quest for adventures-I do wonder if she endured all the hardships she wrote about, especially the snowstorms she rode through? I loved her tales of the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) and the Colorado Rockies-Pardon me, but she was a Victorian Badass!

My library has a book recommendation service. I had never tried it before, but during a pity party a few months back I asked for nonfiction books about interesting spinsters. This was one of those five. Basics: Nonfiction: yes Interesting: yes!! Spinster: .... umm. She did get married, but he died after not very long? So no but I guess ok. The subject of this book? I'd never heard of this woman, but, OMG, she went everywhere and did everything and was a popular writer, and that was great. The writing in this book, however, left a lot to be desired. It wasn't bad, exactly, but there was something missing that made me check twice if this was aimed at young adults. Also there were points - like when her sister got typhoid fever - and the author commented that at the time they didn't know what caused it. And didn't actually mention the answer (which I looked up, it's contaminated water). Lots of parts like that, where there was no reason not to throw in a sentence or two for context, but there was none. That said, there was enough here to hold my interest, but I thought it could have been more gripping.
