This was a bargain book on tape I found at the library a while back. I'm desperate for new book on tape material for my car! The library is no longer selling them! This book is your typical "his manhood filled the room" romance fare, so it's hard to take it seriously, but there was an unusual twist I enjoyed--the earl is a smart and successful guy, but he hides the fact that he cannot read or write. Leading the charge against her is Charles Stirling, who manages to capture her and holds her prisoner on his estate, believing he is the wife of Captain Spindleshanks. Hollie uses the opportunity to spy and work under Charles's nose, which works surprisingly well, since Charles is trying to hide the fact that he's illiterate. They fall in love, but neither is sure how they other will take the revelation of each other's secret. The characters here were very likable. Charles was ignorant of his own misdeeds, as he wasn't able to read much of what he was supporting. He was also never really arrogant or brutish - he seemed like a lost man, desperate for someone to trust. He was quite endearing. And unlike most of Linda Needham's heroines, Hollie wasn't completely grating - she wasn't overly nice, she didn't collect people or kids, she wasn't completely innocent... but she was something of a know-it-all. She only occasionally got on my nerves. The story was pretty decent, watching them fight their attraction while Charles believes she is married. But then around the 80% mark it got a bit unbelievable with their behavior. Charles's reaction to Hollie's secret was really off. Especially when he found out she wasn't actually married. (view spoiler)[ I would think a bit of anger or some rage at the fact that they could have ceased fighting the attraction ages ago or the fact that she lied to him so convincingly and with so much detail for weeks. Instead it was, "Thank God! We can have sex now!" (hide spoiler)] However, I did appreciate the epilogue very much.

Can you imagine an Earl, handsome, smart and intelligent, Oxford graduate, but illiterate? That's Charles. No wonder he missed lots of important details, apalagi yang berhubungan dengan pembunuhan massal yang menewaskan bapaknya Hollie. Charles sedang memburu Kapten Spindleshanks, tokoh reformis radikal. Ngerasain terharunya Hollie waktu Chip nanya, "Are you my mama?" But thanks to Hollie, semua mulai berjalan lancar. Chip-nya lucu. ^^ Jadi pengen meluk. I fall for Charles, I really do. It felt like I wanna hug him and say it's okay to confess. And it broke my heart even more when he didn't get the "I love you, Charles Stirling" message. Agak geregetan ama Hollie yang keukeuh ninggalin Charles, nggak mau bilang I do waktu Charles bilang, marry me. But yeah, di chapter 25, baru berasa kalo Charles is a wicked earl. Tapi epilognya oke. Charles belajar baca, dan memilih mengeja kata-kata aneh, belajar sambil bercinta. Hmpfh! Susah kalo gurunya merangkap istrinya. Tapi kalo dia pinter, pasti dikasih hadiah yang menjanjikan. :)) Bintang 5 demi Charles dan Chip. Lop lop lop! ^^

I tried and tried to like this book more, but it just didn't work for me. It's set in 1819 but felt more like it should be more like a late Victorian. I do like the hero, Charles but I struggled to like the heroine Hollie. I didn't find her to be someone I could relate to, or sympathize with. One aspect I completely enjoyed was the developing relationship between Charles and Chip, his son. When all is said and done I have to give this one barely 3 stars. It wasn't my cup of tea.

This was a great book. But its so typical. The basicness of the romance. Even with that the twists involved are ones that u can enjoy if even its typical. *dont mean to be harsh* i loved it but it could have been more.
