Unfortunately, despite its title, the book has little to say about writing horror. It's mostly a regurgitation of writing tips on how to write a novel from head to toe. It doesn't go in-depth with any idea and also has some grammar mistakes. And this is coming from a non-native English speaker. A good book for beginners though, so i won't give it only 1 star. But i am definitely annoyed at the misleading title. Unfortunately, despite its title, the book has little to say about writing horror. I only paid 99 cents for Horror Writing 101 and for 99 cents a few things can be gleaned from this. There were too many lists, just taking up space and padding the book. The writing at the beginning was a little stilted but seemed to grow more natural through the book. I have to give the young man credit. He wrote a how-to book, self published it, and it seems to be selling well. There are better writing books out there but fewer cheaper ones. This is an ok book, a bit of a nudge. But it could have done with a LOT of editing and streamlining, and really with an actual hook. If you're looking for HORROR writing tips, honestly look elsewhere; there's a lot of fine writing tips here, though, just not what I was looking for. This is an ok book, a bit of a nudge. I have been having trouble getting my book ideas out onto the "paper" and when I saw this book I thought...why not...it can't hurt right? And I was right it didn't hurt at all, and acutally gave me some great insight. This book is full of helpful hints with do's and dont's added. After this read I feel as if I can move forward again. If you want to write horror, or anything really, and are looking for some helpful hint this is the book for you. Well, I can tell the author did a lot of research, but the book is just okay. It'd probably be useful for newbies. There are a LOT of lists! like 64-deep lists. Lists of phobias, scary places, types of villains, types of hairstyles, just anything and everything. I like lists, but come on! There are also some D&D style character worksheets, with loads of questions to ask yourself as you write. The book has a few errors, typos, and mistakes, but not too bad. This book was very informative, quick, and precise. It didn't waste the reader's time with superfluous thoughts and opinions about writing horror novels. It stuck to the facts and provided me with a wealth of new and fascinating insights. I highly recommend it if you are considering writing horror literature. I didn't want to listen to this guy because he's a zombie author--my personal opinion is that's way-past-overdone--but this is a great, common-sense guide for someone who wants to write their first horror novel. And hey, seasoned novelists can learn a thing or three from this, also. Great book lots of data on holding your reader's attention and how to get the most out of each scare in your planned manuscript. If you love horror or write in this genre I suggest picking it up. The chapters and straight forward approach are a refreshing read to other convoluted books on writing. This book was good for getting the creative juices flowing. It offers some good thoughts to help kick start the plotting process. There are a few grammatical errors throughout, but the information was helpful.
