Their next one was to make the 'ultimate move' by getting himself murdered! The village band in Swinbury Abbot has jogged along quite happily for nigh on a decade. Band practices are free and easy affairs, the music never commencing until after a rather lavish meal with wine, followed by more wine, and then maybe running through a piece or two, just for form's sake. Until the vicar turns up with a new musical director, who plays quite a different tune… For the newcomer's ideas of what a band’s routine should consist of are completely at odds with the musicians’ current practices. His clashes with the various band members cause enormous resentment, and, in one of them, a hatred strong enough to provoke murder! Into this welter of negative emotions, Detective Inspector Falconer and Detective Sergeant Carmichael of the Market Darley CID arrive, determined to get to the bottom of things and bring the killer to justice, while simultaneously dealing with their own domestic problems. But the musical mayhem – and the murderousness – doesn't stop there…

The village band in Swinbury Abbot muddles along and many directors have left. The vicar gets them a new director that everyone hates! When he's found dead, it's up to Falconer and Carmichael to find out who did it. Easy to read with lots of funny, witty anecdotes related to the policemen. Their practices are convivial affairs in which food and wine are more important than actually practice. Their previous musical directors have all moved away but the vicar introduces them to a new comer to the village who is volunteering to take over as musical director. However the new director wants to change everything and he doesn't spare the criticism. After he has upset all the members of the band he is found dead in his own home. DI Harry Falconer and DS Davey Carmichael are on the case and they have plenty of suspects - all the members of the band for a start. Their questioning soon uncovers plenty of secrets and involves Falconer in plenty of dodgy encounters with the village dogs which all seem to have taken a fancy to him. I love the relationship between Falconer and Carmichael and the way it is developing. They are like chalk and cheese but have forged an excellent working relationship. The plot of this story is well constructed and the characters are all too believable. I enjoyed reading this story and I love the touches of humour. This is a well written series and if you enjoy crime stories without too much on the page violence then you will probably enjoy this one. The books can be read as standalone novels or as part of a series.

Very funny sixth instalment of the Falconer Files series. I really enjoy the development of the detectives' characters with each new book. I did, however, find that the author's "asides" in this particular book were numerous and distracting. Looking forward to the seventh book. Very funny sixth instalment of the Falconer Files series. Another humorous investigation by Falconer and Carmichael et al. I thought this was an improvement over the previous story and was back to the level of the first couple in the series. A nice easy read that entertained.
