I read his books when I was a teenager, they made quite a sensation in Romania after initial publish. I went for it by curiosity, hearing that his stories were merely true and him being a WW2 war veteran. It is also interesting to heat things from the defeated perspective. Sven Hassel is not at all some great writer, but he manages to deliver in quite a decent manner the story of his life and believe me... he has quite a story. I suspect that not all the facts wrtten might have been true, some could have been augmented to fit the story, but nevertheless it is entertaining, at least was for me at that time. That's why I am giving it 5 stars, but do not expect some philosophical thoughts or mesmerising descriptions in there, the guy was just a soldier who survived to tell the story.

The first time I read this books I was a teenager. It's all about action, but it's also a very good exemplification of the absurdity and futility of war. I just had to read them all, one after the other. The literary part shouldn't be your main focus, but the depiction of people's characters and their reaction under extreme pressure is very realistic. I believe the dryness of the style contributes to the atmosphere. War is not about glory, but about the people who lived and died in it, their stre The first time I read this books I was a teenager. I believe the dryness of the style contributes to the atmosphere. War is not about glory, but about the people who lived and died in it, their strengths and weaknesses; real people, not heroes. You won't find great words, but common language; heroes didn't fought the war, old men, young men and teenagers fought it. But the book isn't just about tragedy, from time to time, you will find yourself laughing out loud as Sven talks about the war years, the years of his lost youth.

You can hate Sven, you can love Sven, you can question his credibility or you can just sit and enjoy one of the funniest, grittiest, saddest novels in the history of books. How many times his characters made me laugh, angry, sad and sometimes even cry. His books shouldn´t be missed, his books in my opinion are masterpieces.

I am a massive fan of the collection as I read them voraciously in my teenage years and many times since then. The characters had special appeal to me, a number of misfits who hated Hitler and the war but were forced to fight for their survival. The author pulls no punches when he describes the atrocities committed by both sides in the cauldron of the Eastern Front. I still have the paperbacks from all those years ago and am replacing them with the hardbacks

I read all of his books and they are my favorites. Obviously all of written stuff are not facts and not the memories lived/witnessed by him or by his group of crazy friends, (many of them collective memories of war of unknown soldiers) this does not make these books look bad. Perfect in all perpectives, fun, scary, sad, anti-war. Perfect !!!

An amazing series of books that is half fiction-half real events that will always keep you interesting. The characters are likeable and really makes you interested in them,as they all have really different personalities. Also this book has the best dark humour moments i have ever read in my life. But also mind, some of the scenes depicted in the book are really graphic, but i liked that as well because it really gives you a feel of how brutal the war was,and what all the people that fought in it went An amazing series of books that is half fiction-half real events that will always keep you interesting. The characters are likeable and really makes you interested in them,as they all have really different personalities. Also this book has the best dark humour moments i have ever read in my life. But also mind, some of the scenes depicted in the book are really graphic, but i liked that as well because it really gives you a feel of how brutal the war was,and what all the people that fought in it went trough. All in all,i recommend all 14 of the books,as they are all amazing !
