A good listing of songs from the war era. Some great background on some of the more obscure recordings. The material was used for the author's college course and about 20% of the text are comments from students. I could have done without most of that. Reading this gave me something to think about. In that time period you could hear war songs, both pro and con everywhere you went. Some of them are considered classics today and still listened to. There is an absence of songs about the current wars of today in popular culture. Why do you think this is so?

The Vietnam War is a very relevant subject. It affected directly or indirectly the lives of so very many people. We all know somebody who served at that time. Last November I found myself talking with a man who had fought with the 101 Airborne during Vietnam, and was one of the most decorated soldiers I'd ever met. I was so painfully ignorant on the subject that I decided then and there that I had to do something about it. I won a giveaway for “Battle Notes” on Goodreads a few years ago, and thought it would be a good place to start. The history of music and how music has affected history has always fascinated me. Listening to the music of an era really opens up the doors to understanding the emotions of a generation better than almost anything else. I took my time getting through this book, listening to each of the songs that were mentioned. Although my music tastes differ significantly from that of the Vietnam era, I still really enjoyed reading this book. I learned so much. “Battle Notes” is a wonderful resource for anyone wanting to learn about the music of that time in history.

An interesting topic and read, but could have strongly benefited from some professional editing. That said, there probably won't be a more definitive look at the subject. Chapters cover protest music, patriotic music, music listened to by soldiers in Vietnam, African-America music of the period and more.
