If you wish to be successful in your business, you need to be proactive rather than reactive. This means you have be on the offensive, ready to face your competitors in the market. In management, we have a principle called The 'Principle of Concerted Action'. This principle of military strategy requires that individuals work together like a well-oiled machine, as a team, to achieve the agreed-on goals and objectives. The first goal of strategy is to increase the amount of money you are earning on the resources that you and others have personally invested in the enterprise. That is your Return On Investment (ROI). you need to maximize your strengths and your opportunities. Therefore you need to ASSESS YOUR CURRENT SITUATION. The CEO or the CFO will be ultimately responsible for the implementation of the strategy. In strategic planning, what you have to do first is think about and agree on the foundation principles of your business. The starting point is your thinking through the values that you stand for and believe in. Once you are clear about your values, you then take some time to project into the future. You develop a vision for what your company would look like if it was perfect in every way. Peter Drucker once said that even when a business is starting out at a kitchen table, if the business does not dream of world leadership, it will never be a big success. The most valuable asset a company has is its reputation. A company’s reputation is defined as “how it is known to others. Your reputation is determined by what customers, competitors, suppliers, outside vendors, and the general public say about you when they discuss your company, your products, and your services among themselves. The next step is for you to determine your mission. Mission is an essential part of all business strategy. A mission statement is always qualitative, not quantitative. A mission statement is not to “Earn a lot of money” or “Increase profitability.” A mission statement is directed outward, toward what you want to do to help and improve the lives of your customers. GE’s mission statement is: “General Electric is a unique, high-spirited, entrepreneurial enterprise known for its unmatched level of excellence, highly profitable with worldwide leadership in each of its product lines.”

I had a really hard time finishing this "quick read." It's only 103 pages so I should have knocked it out in a couple hours - instead it took me three days! By the time I was a quarter of the way through I realized that this was all stuff I knew, I wasn't learning anything new or revolutionary. None the less I committed to the book and needed to see it to the end. In the end I still didn't learn anything new. Everything in this book I learned in school in Marketing 101. I also felt like the author kept flaunting how many books he's written and how many seminars he's done and what big companies he's worked with. I'm a small business owner and this book felt to large of a scale for me. I wouldn't recommend this book for business professional. I would recommend this to someone who has absolutely no experience with business. This isn't a great book about business planning, but it will give you a foundation to start with.

This should have been on a condensed blog. Probably not even that. Perhaps meant as a real beginner level intro - it doesn't work even at that in my opinion. I really wish I can write more, but that is about it. This should have been on a condensed blog. Probably not even that. Not nearly as good or on the same level as Brian's book Victory. Still, I bought the book because I'd like to support Brian's work as an author, and his others in this Success Library series are phenomenal. The material itself is alright but offered nothing new from the earlier reads in the series. The illustrations inline were impressive though.

While not earth moving this book is packed with common sense, which most managers (myself included) need to hear over and over again before truly implementing.
