Free on ComiXology. Never read anything from the Ultimate universe before, and wasn't really interested in it... Miles Morales being the obvious exception. I'm happy that I got the chance to see parts of his origin story, and I definitely want to see more in the future ! Free on ComiXology. While Miles is visiting his Uncle, the thirteen year old is bitten by the radioactive spider. Spider-Man 2.0. His uncle wants to use him, his father hates his kind, and his mother, the only one he can confide in--excluding his best friend, Ganke--dies from a stray bullet when Venom returns to run amok (the Betty Brant ‘who is Spiderman’ investigation, death at the hands of Venom, is one of series' finest moments). Not much actually happens, however, from issue to issue. There’s a good team-up between Spidey and the Prowler, taking down the Scorpion who, thanks to Mysterio, takes over as kingpin following the death of Wilson Frisk. But Miles as Spider-Man is more of a coming-of-age story than a superhero one. Like its predecessor, Bendis focuses on growth and responsibility, but with the added layer of a child forced to carry the mantle following the death of a beloved hero. Advancing quickly to Cataclysm before reaching it’s ‘Ultimate End,’ Miles’ story feels incomplete. He is one the few likable heroes, but our time solely with him is short. Thankfully, the Tom Holland MCU films borrow more from Miles Morales and Ultimate Spider-verse than any form of 616 Peter Parker. Proving that 5 years after the Ultimate line was canceled, the spirit of Ultimate Spider-Man remains.

To be honest, Spider-Man has always been one of my least favorite superheroes. But watching the new reboot with Tom Holland and the new Spider-Man Into the Multiverse has really just pushed me into the fray and I'm so glad they did. This is an awesome start! I can't wait to read more about Miles and his journey into becoming Spider-Man. To be honest, Spider-Man has always been one of my least favorite superheroes. Just a re-read bc it's been some years, inspired by the recent Into the Spider-verse movie. Just a re-read bc it's been some years, inspired by the recent Into the Spider-verse movie.
