    Good recipes that make it possible to find good tasting foods that are free of meats and dairy products. Very good options. More recipes than I expected. It was a great find on Amazon.

    There is no excuse for how incredibly awful this book is. I suppose my first clue should have been the author, Green Protein. What was I thinking? Let's start with the "diet" plan. I only looked closely at the first week (but I doubt things improved). The average calories, fat, and carbs each day are fine. What surprised me was that the fiber (21g/day average) was so low. What *shocked* me was how incredibly out of control the sugar was (96g/day) and the frighteningly low amount of protein (33g/d There is no excuse for how incredibly awful this book is. I suppose my first clue should have been the author, Green Protein. What was I thinking? Let's start with the "diet" plan. I only looked closely at the first week (but I doubt things improved). The average calories, fat, and carbs each day are fine. What surprised me was that the fiber (21g/day average) was so low. What *shocked* me was how incredibly out of control the sugar was (96g/day) and the frighteningly low amount of protein (33g/day). It's as if the book were written by the meat packaging industry to render all vegans too frail to make a fuss. On 1500 calories / day, most of us will lose weight, no worries, but with that tiny intake of protein, you'll only have the strength to lounge on the couch dreaming of a fortifying hamburger (and bouncing up and down from your meal induced sugar highs). But wait, there's more. How about the recipes? Prep time? Average of 97 minutes / day. Me? I don't consider an hour and a half in the kitchen to be anything approaching "quick and easy." Breakfast? Day 2 calls for "Marmalade" as your first meal of the day. Not Marmalade on toast, just big, sugary teaspoons full of fruit and sugar processed into slush inside your food processor. Of course, that looks pretty good compared to Kale, Onions, and Garlic as a refreshing eye-opener (luckily, that can be prepared in just 22 minutes, 3 minutes less than the Kohlrabi and Carrots). For lunch you can enjoy Fluffy Vegan Pancakes (not to be confused with the Easy Vegan Pancakes which are reserved for dinner). Watch out for the "pasta" dishes, like Thai Peanut, where a scant 8 oz. of pasta has to be divided up into 3 servings if you want to "enjoy" that dish for only 480 calories. There are also several "meals" that look to me like intentionally unappetizing bowls of vegetable matter. Parsley Salad (big old bowl of parsley mixed with bulgur), Cabbage and Pecan Salad (yup, bowl full of cabbage and pecans, topped with soy sauce and the ubiquitous sugar). Hey, I'm not disrespecting veganism. In fact, I bought this book specifically to try incorporating a few days / week of vegan eating into my diet (and I am going to continue to pursue that in spite of this book). What I am putting down is this particular collection of junk nutrition and gross recipes. Normally when I don't like a book, I donate it to the library. Not this one. This book needs to be punished. I'm putting it on the lending library shelf at work where it can collect dust alongside How to Program in DOS, Windows 1.0, and the complete works of Nora Roberts.
