My Mother had a Harrowsmith cookbook when I was a kid. To be honest, I bought it before recipe websites were so popular...I needed a butter tart recipe, and found a couple in here. It's a bit of a splash of Canadian culture... a mix of recipes, and some "Canadianized"... what is going on up there, putting pineapple in everything? Do we just fantasize about Hawaii in the dead of winter too much? There's everything in here from desserts and granolas to stewed beaver... For Canadians it's a little taste of home... perhaps "home away from home" if you take that pineapple into consideration (I kid, there's not too much pineapple in there...and if you like Moose, there are recipes for that, too!). O' Canada....

This is rapidly becoming my favorite cookbook for last minute meal ideas. Recommend the Baked Chicken Rosemary, Chicken with Broccoli, Chicken or Turkey Divan and Banana Oat Muffins. For the divan, the biscuit crust was a hit and good enough to make on it's own. Recently been going through the apple recipes due to an abundant crop. Scotch Apple Pudding and Apple Gingerbread, both easy to make and very good. This hard copy book is a consolidation of 3 previously published soft covers. I've referred to these recipes so frequently my original soft copies are long gone and I'm now on my second hard copy volume which is also showing wear. There are errors in a few of the recipes (do you really want to add 2 tbsp of salt) and some of them are definitely from a by gone era. However, should be part of every kitchen interested in cooking uncomplicated food using fresh ingredients. Surprisingly complete, this has become one of my go-to books when I want to cook something I've never cooked before. Recipes were collected from readers of the magazine so every one has been thoroughly tested. Love it! I actually own all three of the soft backs. I used them constantly when my kids were at home and I was well. Huge compendium of recipes.
