In the words of its author, Marc Sumerak, "The style of these movies is: Although there's magic all over the place...Hogwarts is a very physical, very real, very solid place". The talent and skill it takes to create this world, these characters, these creatures is deserving of countless accolades. The book combines visual and graphic art, sketches and partial stills from the movies in order to share how the various artists were able to bring the Wizarding World of Harry Potter to life. It serves as a masterful way to understand how the pages from J.K. Rowling's books eventually came to life on the big screen. (There are even sketches and artist renderings for characters and/or story lines that did not make it the big screen. Take for example the ghost Peeves. We read about him in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, but there is no reference to him in the screen adaptation). You will not be disappointed with this book.

That pretty much sums up the book but boy if that is all you can say about it then you are missing so much. The books size (and yes weight) means that the heavy gauge paper have huge illustrations of the world that Harry Potter inhabited - so you have images that never before have been seen in hugh high quality spreads. Not only that you can see how creates, characters and please all evolved in to the iconic images we so quickly recognise today. Now its doing the book a massive disservice to say every Potter fan should have this book. No I think every person who can appreciate a good film, appreciate imagination and creativity will be impressed by this book. This is one of those books that if you know someone who has it - you are just dying to borrow it to read although you know from the instant you first handle it you will planning on going out and buying your own copy of it too.

Easily the best purchase I've made this year. I so badly want all of the artwork in this to hang all over my home. Genuinely stunning stuff. Easily the best purchase I've made this year. I so badly want all of the artwork in this to hang all over my home. Genuinely stunning stuff.

A beautiful guide through the art of the Harry Potter movies. Not much text, but such stunning pictures, drawings and concept art of everything from logos and props to costumes, scenes and even Quidditch fields.

Me, counting picture books towards my goodreads challenge? You're damn right I am. This was an exhaustive collection of art from the Harry Potter films, containing everything from blueprints of Gringotts to copies of Mrs Weasley's homemade jam labels. It was wonderful to see the amount of detail that went into creating the series, and really makes you appreciate the unsung heroes of film - art directors, costume and prop designers deserve a lot more credit! My only critique is that I found the book slightly disjointed at some points and think it could have been organised in a different way.

This is an absolutely HUGE hardback full of stunning images from the Harry Potter movies. I’ve only flicked through it and I’m already in love (I’ll update this review with pictures when I get a chance to read it properly). It has an RRP if £49.99 but it’s currently on sale in ASDA for a bargain £20 so if it’s on your wish list you might want to grab a copy while it’s so cheap!

JK Rowling painted the world of Harry Potter with her words. In "The Art Of Harry Potter" we get a chance to see that world in pictures created by the artistic team responsible for putting the 'painted' words to the movie screen. This is a beautiful oversize book full of illustrations that capture the sets that were used, the characters, the creatures and the unique detail of the props. Because the book consists of 95% pictures vs. words the reader can experience the entire work within two hours. JK Rowling painted the world of Harry Potter with her words. So I've had a really nice day today. I went out with friends and relaxed and when I got home I cleaned a bit, now that I'm done cleaning I decided I wanted to read this book - properly. 5 stars - I've been sort of absently flipping through this one for a while, but decided I wanted to take about half an hour to just read the bits of text and look at every page. It was really fun to see how different some of the characters were originally and how the different artists had different interpretations. This is just the kind of book that makes me wish I had a coffee table to put it on.

https://thebooksareeverywhere.com/201... I got this beautiful book for my birthday from my other half and I decided to properly read it! It’s one of those books that you would usually flick through occasionally, but I felt like reading it was so satisfying and wonderful! It’s one of those books that you would usually flick through occasionally, but I felt like reading it was so satisfying and wonderful! I’ve been a big Harry Potter fan since I read the books earlier this year and watched the movies soon after. This book was the perfect way to delve even deeper into the world. Chapter One: The Wizarding World contains beautiful scenes of the Muggle world, Hogwarts, Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, Wizarding homes and even the Quidditch World Cup! This was, by far, my favourite chapter in this book. Seeing so many incredible views of the world were just breathtaking. The paper is glossy and shows colours so well, each picture giving off such a rich and lifelike feel. Chapter Two: Wizards, Witches, and Muggles. This chapter includes Hogwarts students, the Order of the Phoenix, Hogwarts staff, dark forces and even goes into detail about the Triwizard tournament. Character sketches include in a location, concept sketches, outfit planning and studies. They are, again, beautiful, and it becomes evident how hard the staff worked on getting every little detail just right. Chapter Three: Magical Creatures includes those such as companions, dragons, house elves, Forbidden Forest dwellers and dark creatures. This topic also happens to contain my favourite page in the entire book – the patronus of Severus Snape. The glow that seems to shine from this page is just incredible, and I had to include a picture above to show you all. I also includes the funniest page – a study of different House Elves! They were never used in the movie but they made me and Josh laugh out loud. Chapter Four: Artifacts includes so many items, such as wands, brooms, Quidditch items, dark objects, Horcruxes, portraits and items from Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes. Again, you can really see the detail when flicking through these beautiful, complicated studies of seemingly trivial items. The thing that really hit me, when reading these chapters, was the amount that makes up this magical world. Such small items require work, and make the world what it is. The last chapter is a more shocking one, Graphic Art of the Wizarding World. This includes book covers, Quidditch posters, documents, blueprints magazines and newspapers, food and drink and even potion bottle labels! I have to say, this one surprised me. What might seem trivial turned out to be the beating heart of this world. These things are the foundations that the Wizarding World is built upon, the glue that holds it together. And they are absolutely beautiful and full of colour and detail. Overall, I found this book pure comfort. It felt so relaxing to be able to be in this world once more, but in a fresh and different way. It’s the perfect book to read in bed on a quiet evening. It’s absolute beauty. It’s breathtaking magic. ★★★★★ 5 stars -Beth May your shelves forever overflow with books! ☽

While waiting for the sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the next best thing is a visual journey into the artwork of the film series via Harper Design’s new 364-page, giant hardcover book, The Art of Harry Potter. A gallery of more than 600 images, The Art of Harry Potter covers the eight movies, all created under the watchful eye of Academy Award-winning production designer Stuart Craig. This collection is entirely different from any behind the scenes art book we’ve seen, breaking down the films by environments, characters, beasts, artifacts, and the most eye-opening: the graphic art that grounded the films in the real world. The graphic art includes photographs of book covers, key documents by MinaLima that were seen onscreen, potion bottles, magazines and newspapers, blueprints, maps, heraldry, Quidditch signage, food and beverage containers, posters, and tapestries. Trying to mock up a Harry Potter room in your house? This is your sourcebook. With only eight pages of descriptive text, no in-depth interviews with creators, or the like, and only photo captions to guide you on your journey, consider this volume the ultimate album of the concept artwork that inspired the films. The most unique section of the book looks into all the artwork that adorned the Hogwarts school and other environments. These were images that may not have been seen on the screen at all, or images seen only in the corner of a frame flashing by quickly, but all worthy of gallery display. Don’t expect to find photographs of actors or as-photographed screen images–these images represent the ideas that were developed over the decade between 2001 and 2011 that were then crafted into the final screen costumes, props, stages, and Harry Potter magic. The book also includes four fold-out pages, featuring a giant rendition of Hogwarts concept art, the entrance hall to Hogwarts, the Horntail from the Triwizard Tournament, a stunning portrait gallery of wizards and witches that adorned the walls of Hogwarts, and blueprints for the Shrieking Shack. Ideally these images would look superb interspersed into and illustrating the text of a new edition of J.K. Rowling’s novels. The next must-have book for fans of Harry Potter, The Art of Harry Potter is available now from Harper Design in the U.S. and Titan Books in the UK.

This book is enormous. I describe some huge books as 'bricks', but this is, like, a brick sandwich. This is three bricks in a trench coat. This is a weighted blanket full of bricks. There are a few huge fold-out pages which is great! I especially enjoyed seeing the concepts that didn't eventually make it into the movies. It's fun to imagine how different the movies would have been had they made a few different choices. My favorite part was the chapter on the graphic arts department. MinaLima (the graphic designers that worked on all the films) are so talented and I love their work. I'd frame it all if I could. I know this is a book with just the art, but I wish there had been more background information on why certain concepts were chosen over others. Much of the concept art just left me wondering, and those questions aren't all answered in, say, Harry Potter Page to Screen: The Complete Filmmaking Journey. Most of the text in the book is descriptions of the various images, but the descriptions were annoying to read because they were so obvious. Like, yes, I can see that this is a painting of Hogwarts, you don't have to tell me, it's right there. Just tell me who made it and preferably a fun fact as well, that's all I need.

I wanted a lot more newer photos, newer things we hadn't seen, etc. There's very little writing in the book, no chapters with explanations (for example, we see that indeed they had planned on making Hermione's dress Periwinkle Blue! There's even artwork to prove it!) but we don't know why things were changed etc. Is the book worth it..eh..maybe. If you haven't read the movie magic/vault books, then by all means, yes this book is worth it. If you want to read the artifact vault, movie locations, etc books, then maybe hold off on this one as all those books are expensive as well, and you will learn a lot more from those books than this one. Plus it's a super heavy book (almost 7 pounds!) so it's not very portable!

This is a really lovely, really *LARGE* coffee-table style book that features concept art from the films based on the books. I like the concept art for the things that did not make it in the films; it was nice to see renderings for those things. Seeing a few different concept images compared to what the final product is/was also was a nice feature (I'm thinking specifically of the Ravenclaw diadem). Being an art book, there is little commentary outside of captions, but every chapter had a one page introduction. I think someone should have edited those intros better due to the redundancy of phrasing and overuse of "from ABC to xyz." It was present in just about every intro, some multiple times. Other than that teensy bit of nitpicking, this book is BEAUTIFUL. Being an art book, there is little commentary outside of captions, but every chapter had a one page introduction. Fantastic! The book is absolutely monstrous in size. It is full of beautiful artwork, no photos whatsoever, though a few of the pieces have been digitally composed. The art is mostly inspired by the films portrayal of the story but I was happy to see there are also a few that come directly from the books. Must have for any collector, love it.
