MY REVIEW FOR IRENE BY TERRI BRUCE Irene and the Witch – Afterlife Book 3.5 Irene is dead, stuck in Purgatory, trying to return to Earth as a guardian angel. Her traveling companion, Andras, is a 12th century Spanish knight, dead since 1911. Most of the time he is invisible. It takes tremendous effort for him to appear in ghostly form. Makes me think of when Bobby was a ghost in the Supernatural TV show. They have a psychic link. Are there things worse than death? You betcha. Makes me think of when Bobby was a ghost in the Supernatural TV show. They have a psychic link. Are there things worse than death? You betcha. Ya want to know what it’s like being in a crystal ball? Ask Irene. Even dead, her impatient recklessness has her in trouble. Can a ghost burn, feel pain, be tortured, die again? Irene worked through her fear, knowing they would all die if she didn’t persevere, push through, overcome. I have been loving this series ever since I read Hereafter. I knew it would be a different kind of ghost story and Terri Bruce’s imagination and creativity have taken me into a world both wondrous and frightening, and I am so happy I am only here as a visitor. I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Irene, which is included in the Myths and Magic: An Epic Fantasy and Speculative Fiction Boxed Set. I will be reviewing more of the books, so keep in touch and we’ll talk more. See more at fundinmental

For me, this collection offered a very mixed bag. Writing that ranged from excellent to very poor, and stories from genres which I really enjoy, to some which simply don’t interest me (and one which I read because Terri Bruce managed to keep my attention in spite of that!). I’ll focus on those stories I liked, and would recommend to you: Fox Trap, by Jayne Fury. A vampire/shifter fantasy with a touch of SF, brilliantly done. 6* I want more from Jayne Fury! Burn Bright, by Bec McMaster. Great classical/mythological fantasy with good plot, pace, characters and well-written action - and a bit of romance. 5* I’ll look see what else Bec McMaster has written. Never Magic, by Caroline A. Gill. A desperate young woman breaks every holy rule to borrow magic sacred to men; the Jewish holocaust is an overt part of the inspiration for this superb story. 5* Questmaster, by Jessica West. An RPG-based fantasy, beautifully executed but ending rather abruptly. 4* Bravery, by L.C. Ireland is a classic fantasy/fairytale, very well told. 4* Fabled, by Kara Jaynes. I thought this rather juvenile, but there’s a lot of story here and engaging enough characters to stick with it. 3* Lastly, Irene and the Witch, by Terri Bruce. The afterlife, magic, and supernatural are themes I generally avoid. The fact that Terri Bruce managed to keep me turning pages all the way to the end is thus quite impressive. I did not attempt to read Wielding His Scythe; Marradith, Darkly; or Healing the Bayou, and cannot offer any review on them: these stories are simply in genres I do not read. The other five stories I either read or attempted to read, and cannot recommend. The box set is absolutely worth the $2.99 I paid for it, but please do not be put off by the opening two stories, which are far below the average standard here.

What an outstanding collection of fantasy books. Each and every one was awesome. One in particular by Calinda B Full Moon Falling, kept me intrigued.

Rather bleh. In the entire collecting there were three stories that were well written, had engaging characters that i cared about, and storylines that were solid. For a collection of a dozen, that's not enough. If the others were written by novice authors, it could be forgiven. Everyone needs to start somewhere. But these were all established authors. Maybe i wasn't the targeted audience, but it was still lacking. Rather bleh. Think this is 16 full length novels, it was .99 and is now free on KU. So I plan on picking and chosing from what's here... Burn Bright by Bec McMaster was really good. Soul Trade - C.I. Black A new author for me and I was intrigued with the story from the very beginning. Rowan was likeable and the story flowed well and was easy to follow. It was also unique enough to keep me guessing, with a well thought out plot and character development. I will definitely be looking out for more from this author. I received an ARC of Soul Trade and this is my honest review.

I received an arc copy of this book and I voluntarily leave my review. This is the first book I’ve read and reviewed for C.I Black Soul Trade and I really enjoyed reading it. Soul Trade is a part of the Myths and Magic boxset. Great storyline and characters, there’s demons, Magic and a killer on the loose what more would u want. Great book a must read.

K.N. Lee Silenced - Amazing! An introduction to a new series. I read Silenced by K.N. Lee. Willa, a powerful witch, is out for revenge on the Vampire King Lukas. I loved it! It was amazing. At one point it got pretty gruesome… But it’s not a complete story, just an introduction. I really want to read more, really really, so 5 stars!

For the story Never Magic This was a solid story with its strength in getting the reader emotionally involved in the struggles of a group of people along with the personal struggles of the specific characters.

3.5 stars. If you love Fantasy and SciFi, then this is a set of stories you have to get! Add in sixteen diverse writers and it gets even better. The variety of the authors and storylines will keep you riveted. I found a couple of new authors (new to me at least) and you might too.

Silenced-K.N. Lee 3 stars This was an intriguing short. No cliffie ending would have been nice..especially since the story had just hit all the cool parts! Burn Bright-Bec McMaster 4 stars This was quite the spin on the tale of the firebird! The pacing was good, the characters well written, and the plot was intriguing. A unique take on good vs. evil and corruption of power.

I am specifically reviewing the following stories in this boxed set: ****Full Moon Falling by Calinda B: Pretty good, different A little bit slow to start/to set the stage, and then fast paced and different with a new slant to “Death”. I enjoyed it!

Notwithstanding its lead in, not all these authors are newbies. Certainly it would be hard to label KN Lee as such. I’ve read plenty of her books and have enjoyed them. Not surprisingly then that I enjoyed her contribution. It has her signature of relatable characters that just feel “real” even in the extraordinary context you find them. In “Silenced” we meet Willa, Grand Caster Elite who invented the cure for a vampire’s death by sunlight. She’s on the run from the Vampire King of the West (who Notwithstanding its lead in, not all these authors are newbies. Certainly it would be hard to label KN Lee as such. In “Silenced” we meet Willa, Grand Caster Elite who invented the cure for a vampire’s death by sunlight. She’s on the run from the Vampire King of the West (who actually stole her from her fiancé) and, along with her two best friends (who are high rank witches) and a vampire seeking his own freedom, she vows to destroy the king and Take back her life. Powerful stuff and worth the anthology price in itself. Similarly, I’ve read books by Calinda B and was not surprised to enjoy “Full Moon Falling” with its great mix of action and well crafted characters. This one is also great - and another book easily worth the price of the anthology. It’s lead Kara Falko has some horrendous choices to make. Save her fiancé or not. Save a stranger, Ace Diamanté, a petty thief, from dying in a hideous ritual on the full moon, or not. Stay an FBI agent or be a Valkyrie. Save all existence or not (not as easy a choice as one might think as there are consequences that will require dramatic sacrifice). Making these choices, and learning how to handle all the baggage that comes with them, is powerful stuff and this is one exciting book. Heck there’s even a nice romance. The only downside? On finishing it, and despite the very satisfactory conclusion here (don’t worry, there’s no cliffhanger) I got very frustrated that I couldn’t go on to book 2! The same sense of satisfaction holds true for CI Black, author of the Medusa Files books that I really loved. Black’s contribution was Soul Trade. The lead here is Rowan Hill, an occult criminologist for the FBI. She’s just the kind of kick-a** take-no-prisoners heroine I adore. So sure, go ahead sexy demon Seth, kidnap her when she’s trying to investigate possible occult killings, and dump her in a parallel world filled with monsters. She’ll deal with your (yummy) charms and rule the day in the end. Ok, I’ve diverted a bit too much. Having noted the authors I know (and whose works I read first), just two comments: (i) the box set is worth getting just for the three stories above and (ii) there certainly are plenty of other new - or at least new to me - authors in this boxset, basically those who wrote the other contributions to the set, and their stories quite frankly look like a ton of fun.

Great Collection of Paranormal Stories. I've only read a few to date but if they are any indication of the rest of the collection then this will be an exceptional way to lose myself for a few hours. Very well done and entertaining. I only read Full Moon Falling Favors for the Fallen Book One By Calinda B What can I say it was awesome fast paced and plenty of twists and turns. Romance too lol Kara is half human/Valkyrie and will have to make a choice. She hooks up with death and the story takes off from there.
