I know this is a children's book and that it is designed for children to be able to read the Disney story of the little mermaid, but I still loved this so much. I read this with my significant other as a bedtime rutine. We switched between being the reader and the listener, and how we felt at each bedtime reading (how tired we were or if we had a day off from work/school etc.) decided how many pages we read. Some nights it could be just 2 and other nights it could be up to 12. But only if it suits both people in said relationship of course. Now.... what bedtime story do we read next?

Ok I defy anyone who’s watched the movie to try and read this book without bursting into song!! I also really wanna watch the movie again now! I love the concept artwork mixed in with the story, it really feels like a piece of history, I loved it! Ps I’m not biased at all, it’s just my favourite Disney movie! Haha x

For me, this book was worth the price of purchase for the beautiful endpapers alone. The book says the artwork is by Andy Gaskill, artist and imagineer. Beautiful work! Lily Murray does a good job adapting the plot to text. Quite a bit of original dialogue is sprinkled throughout. I liked seeing the concept art throughout the book; little things like an early sketch where Flounder appears to be a dolphin, Triton is thinner with an orange tail, etc. It's fun to see the development to the final ve For me, this book was worth the price of purchase for the beautiful endpapers alone. The presentation here is gorgeous, a clothbound hardback with ribbon bookmark and delicious paperstock. My only complaint is that the art - the reason I grabbed a copy - isn’t always great printing quality. This will definitely be a hit with the target audience- although Flounder fans like myself may be a little sad. The story, understandable condensed, has pretty much erased his presence and character.

A lovely picture book to introduce new readers not only to the story of the Little Mermaid, but also to the idea of how much art and hard work went into making the original film. The book contains a glossary of animation terms and credits several prominent artists who made the artwork so that budding animation fans can learn about the field. The writing is stilted at times but this book is really about the art, and in that regard it’s beautiful.

Despite it being a book for kids (although I would not give this book to a kid because it is too pretty), it was still a really enjoyable read!
