(This is actually a review of The Final Frontier adaptation by itself, which isn't in the Goodreads database.) I was late to the party with Star Wars; I didn't even see the original trilogy until after Attack of the Clones came out. It seemed like everyone knew about it but me; I remembered the infamous poster that showed Anakin as a kid with Darth Vader as his shadow, but, until I saw Return of the Jedi, I wondered: How does everyone know Anakin and Vader are the same guy? My mom--who is not a big sci-fi fan--recommended I give Star Trek a try as well; so, I checked out The Final Frontier on DVD from the library...and was bored. Years later, I tried watching it again, and I completed it...but, it was a struggle. To this day, I consider it among the worst Star Trek flicks; then again, I much prefer the Next Generation movies and the reboot trilogy--the first of which I saw on opening night in IMAX--over the original films. So...why did I pick this up? My local Ollie's has discount comic packs that include some vintage issues; however, you don't know what most of them are until you open it. I much prefer old-school funny books over the newer ones; everything is more fun, especially the ads, and the content is generally cleaner. I wasn't exactly excited that this adaptation was in the set I got, but it could be worse; at least it wasn't something obscene or girly. While the source material wasn't the best, I have to hand it to the writers and illustrators; they did an excellent job here. Pretty much anything Peter David does shows serious craftsmanship, and that's the case here. If you're a fan of the original flick, you may feel differently; for me, I couldn't get past the fact that it was based on a shoddy movie.

I'd read the Undiscovered Country adaptation before, but The Final Frontier was all new. It did a nice job of telling the story, but the real treat was the ending. Production on the movie was famously flawed and as a result Shatner's vision for the final scene was unrealized, leaving Kirk to run from flashing lights and sound effects. Here we actually see the beast in it's true form, chasing Kirk and pounding starships. It was worth it just for that.
