Now, WHO would have thought this? I LOVED this book and its sweet little characters, Tobin, Wily, Talua, and Hess. These little mice were so sweet and brave... they found that partnerships can be based on trust and goodwill while others are deceitful, you have to consider who you make deals with. While breaking the rules on weather watching, Tobin, Talua, and Wily narrowly escape a spider attack on the burrow, but the huge spiders steal the new pinkling, brother to Tobin and Talua. Despite the dangers to themselves these three superheroes leave the safety of the broken burrow and follow the spiders to steal back their brother. On the way, the little mice have to make decisions about how to go forward and who to trust. This is about new alliances to mutual benefit. I This is more than a children's story and I was totally engaged in the plight of the team... the writing was quick and easy enough for a small child or grandma to understand. I have to admit, it drew a misty eye for Hess's plight. I won't tell you what that was because I want you to read it. 5 stars from me! Happy Reading!

This book surprised me! I thought it would be a cute little journey with some light action and lots of cuddly references. Now, don't get me wrong, it had lots of cute critters and descriptions like "a hare's leap away" that really brought us down into this tunneling, towering world of the mice. And there was terrific imagery that put us right into those little mice bodies on their big adventure across the creek into unknown lands. The cliffhanger chapters had us gasping for "one more!" And the laugh-out-loud moments provided much-needed comic relief to break up the rollercoaster ride. I read this with my 10-year-old, but one night my 13-year-old listened in, borrowed it, and finished it in two nights (one of which he was up too late, thank you very much, Rina...). All three of us thought it a fun adventure and we'd love to read more!

Today is the day his parents are having a new pinkling and that is what everyone wants to know about and Tobin doesn't really want to deal with all that. He desides to sneak out his window, something he isn't allowed to do, and go find Wiley his friend so they can watch the weather. While they are doing that Tobin's little sister comes to get him because the pinkling has been born, but Tobin prefers watching the weather with Wiley. They decide on a plan, that they could quickly go see the pinkling and then go up to the lookout and watch the storm. While doing so they are the only ones up in the lookout when the storm hits. Lightening strikes a tree close to their home and changes their whole world. The tree comes crashing down right next to their burrow and Tobin, Wiley and Talia watch as some scary large spiders break into their home. They are trying their best to hide from them but they watch in horror as the new pinkling is taken. So now it's up to Tobin, Wiley and Talia to break the rules of the burrow and go on an adventure to rescue the little pinkling. Along the way Tobin and the gang make some unlikely friends because they all had a common enemy, the huge hunter spiders. Tobin learns that sometimes rules are just a guideline to follow when you know you must adventure out past the boundaries. This was such a cute mouse adventure story! I loved all the characters and there was lots of great lessons to learn about putting aside differences and working together for a common goal. Or following through on a promise even when others wanted you to break it. I would highly recommend this for young readers as well as adults who enjoy a fun middle grade story.

But when a storm brings trouble to the burrow Tobin, his best friend, and his younger sister are faced with a decision: keep to the rules or break them in order to rescue Tobin’s newborn sibling whose been snatched away by spider invaders. What follows is a clever and exciting journey as Tobin and his friends set out across the river to rescue the baby. Along they way the micelings meet surprising new friends, discover things about themselves and each other, and most of all, keep pushing forward to rescue the baby. Journey Beyond The Burrow is a delightful tale full of heart, adventure and learning that sometimes the rules have to be changed. Although there is peril aplenty for the young mice, the gentle spirit of Heisel’s writing will keep young readers in suspenseful wonder. I loved looking at the world from a mouse’s POV, and exploring how the various creatures might co-exist and even cooperate when their lives are threatened. Inherent to the story are some important lessons for MG readers about bravery, friendship and learning to see others for who they are, not who we think they are. Thank you to HarperCollins and Edelweiss+ for the opportunity to read an advanced copy.

There are plenty of daring escapes and close calls to keep readers on the edges of their seats. The natural world is described in such rich and vivid detail. And the friends and alliances the mice make in the course of their quest are unexpected and absolutely delightful. As the cover blurb suggests, this book really did remind me, in the best possible way, of the 'Poppy' series I devoured with my kids when they were younger. Readers will cheer for Tobin and his adventurous band. Many thanks to the author and to Harper Collins Children's Books for the advanced review copy.

Who knew I could get so engrossed in a tale of three mice on a journey to rescue their little brother from a nest of bloodthirsty spiders (which, as described in this book, is truly the stuff of nightmares)? Journey Beyond the Burrow will keep you turning the pages long into the night. The story follows a young mouse who goes on a heroic journey with his friend and sister. They encounter creatures of all kinds, creating heart-pounding action until the very end. The vivid descriptions allow you to see the world through the eyes of a mouse. I would definitely recommend this book to kids on the upper end of middle grade, but with that being said, kids who aren't fazed by the way the animal kingdom works shouldn't have a problem with this. There are some great themes of perseverance, camaraderie, and teamwork throughout the story. When the group of mice team up with some unlikely allies, it shows that not everything is as it seems on the outside and that help can come from the most unexpected places if you give someone a chance to show you who they really are on the inside. With incredible creatures, a unique point of view, and unrelenting action, this is an awesome book for middle graders!

Tobin, his younger sister, Talia, and Tobin's best friend, Wiley, band together to journey through the forest to rescue Tobin's new baby sibling, kidnapped by giant invader spiders. The most delightful part of this tale is the unexpected friendship that forms between the mouse trio and a snake named Hess. Snakes are predators, who would usually eat a trio of intrepid mice, but Hess vows to help them retrieve the pinkling. Seems the snake community hates the giant spiders too. I love how much the reader learns about nature, without even realizing they're learning. Forest canopies, gorges, groundhog tunnels, how a fallen tree across a creek becomes a bridge for an army of giant spiders. You'll begin to feel that you, too, live in the forest with all these diverse creatures. I'm not at all surprised that the author has worked in public television as a scriptwriter for natural science documentaries. Her knowledge shines through.

What a fantastic read. It was INTENSE! It's a big adventure from beginning to end, with unlikely friendships, constant danger, and a lot of bravery and problem solving required. Tobin is an easy protagonist to relate to; he's a smart older brother, who cares a lot about his little siblings and his parents. I appreciated that this book touched on sensitive topics, like miscarriage and how it can affect an older sibling, while not becoming overly sad or heavy so that it's still a fun adventure for kids.

This is not a story about animals, but about humans who have somehow taken animal forms. I kept thinking we'd learn that these animals weren't really animals, but humans that had been cursed to live in animal forms. Or something like tht. This was a pre-read for a possible read-aloud in the fall with school kids. Animal adventure stories always seem to go over well with the school-age set. This one will not disappoint! It moves quickly with plenty of action. There are some good life lessons in this story as well. Following rules, accepting others, helping others, and family are woven in. I think kids will really enjoy this book
