Here's a link: https://frolic.media/exclusive-once-u... I hope you all love the cover as much as I do! P.S. The UK will have a separate and very different cover, which will be revealed at a later date. xo I'm so excited to share that Once Upon a Broken Heart has a full description: The first book in a new series about love, curses, and the lengths that people will go to for happily ever after.   Evangeline Fox was raised in her beloved father’s curiosity shop, where she grew up on legends about immortals, like the tragic Prince of Hearts. She knows his powers are mythic, his kiss is worth dying for, and that bargains with him rarely end well.  But when Evangeline learns that the love of her life is about to marry another, she becomes desperate enough to offer the Prince of Hearts whatever he wants in exchange for his help to stop the wedding. The prince only asks for three kisses. But after Evangeline’s first promised kiss, she learns that the Prince of Hearts wants far more from her than she’d pledged. And he has plans for Evangeline that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy…  That's all for now, but I can't wait to share more soon! xo

this book made me remember that my answer to the age old question, “if you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?” is the world of caraval. it was honestly so good to be back and revisit some old, beloved characters. it was nice to see a glimpse of what scarlett and donatella were getting up to, but i also loved the focus on jacks. the fate has been through it. so it was interesting to see how he bounces back and the different kinds of mischief he gets into. i also think evang this book made me remember that my answer to the age old question, “if you could live in any fictional world, which one would it be?” is the world of caraval. it was honestly so good to be back and revisit some old, beloved characters. it was nice to see a glimpse of what scarlett and donatella were getting up to, but i also loved the focus on jacks. the fate has been through it. so it was interesting to see how he bounces back and the different kinds of mischief he gets into. i also think evangeline is a great new character and her chemistry with jacks is amazing. i love that the plot is very magic-focused, particularly on a new kind of magic that hasnt been explored yet in the world of caraval (which is surprising because there is so much). i enjoyed reading about the old royal family, the arches, the prophecy and how jacks has made evangeline the center of it all. this is a pretty successful start to a companion series and i am genuinely looking forward to how the story will play out! ↠ 4.5 stars

Oh my FATES is this one good!!! I don't want it to end! *Edited after finishing* Well hell, did this just become 0ne of my top reads of 2021? Why yes, yes it did. Holy book gods, this one was mother fricking GOOD!!! The twists and turns, the love story, and okay hel-lo intricate magic system. Seriously, the part of this book that I feel like is going to get overlooked for the (legitimately awesome) romance and action is the freaking MAGIC SYSTEM. No one does magical details like Stephanie Garber. Oh my FATES is this one good!!! I don't want it to end! *Edited after finishing* Well hell, did this just become 0ne of my top reads of 2021? [Here would be where I drop tantalizing examples, but I'm writing this review pre-release and I don't want to be naughty and add in any spoilers.] Also, THE PRINCE OF HEARTS. Come ON, this dude is everything my villain-loving heart wants. Shady, secretive, maybe a cinnamon roll or maybe he's actually pretty wicked and we all just don't know but really no one cares because none of us promised to fall for a good guy anyway. Alright, I'll stop rambling, but yeah. Holy crap. So freaking good. Definitely add this to your TBR if you like whimsical fantasy and morally gray love interests!

The sacred language of fangirling everywhere)I could explain all of those emotions one by one. Alas, I do not have enough time, nor the necessary brain cells to bestow upon my charcoal masked face the ability to express myself with something akin to intelligence. Needing to fangirl and screech and scream, I shall start this all, with the following: OH MY GAWD, OH MY GOODNESS, BLOODY HEARTS ON A SCREWDRIVER. WHAT IS HAPPENING, AHH, IT HURTS. MY HEART, WHERE IS IT?? GFTFGYIHUOBYVGFCDXSZREDTGYUHJN I CANNOT CONTINUE WITH LIFE. I GIVE UP. I CAN'T NO MO- Hello, and welcometh yallselves to my humble abode of tears and rereading a certain chapter where a certain someone almost got turned into a certain bloodsucking something. (if you understood that, we're either the same person or soulmates) And of course, without forgetting that um... someone in the room *looks directly at you, yes, I can see you through the screen. My telepathy abilities are too strong* squealed like a maniac on about- let's calculate... oh that's right! THE WHOLE BOOK. Okay, fine! It was me=. I was the creepy 3 am voice that woke you up and made you think that a chair with clothes was an actual human. And it was also me that, with that act, made you burrow beneath the covers in search of a book to binge while the terror coursed through your body. So now, this is me, telling you to pretty please read this book so I can stop hunting you and coercing you (however gently) to read it. Jacks is a freaking blessing, and come on, don't you want to stop bleaching your eyes after reading about a bad love interest? Oh wait, is that just me? *speshul snowflake syndrome selected* I know, I know, I sound half-insane- but get this, I haven't stopped thinking about this book for about three days. I need to get all the creepy and crazy Booksy out of my system. And with that, let's continue All The Ways Booksy Can Fangirl Without Giving The Neighbors Pure Nosebleeds Because Of The High Celine Dion Notes. "Psst, go read Caraval first, though." -only sane brain cell. The plot of this story, moved at the pace of me trying to go to the bathroom in a socially awkward situation. It jumped, hurdled, didn't miss anything, flew, outright told me to clear my schedule BECAUSE I WAS FINISHING THE BOOK IN ONE SITTING and I absolutely followed its instructions. The world was so magical, the chapters arrested my attention and held it hostage for the majority of the book. I adored the premise of how grandiose everything was. I was smiling and giggling whenever the characters would go from mystery to mystery, trying to solve it all. The scent of candied apples and oh, so delicious vials of poison made me all the more interested in the book and my goodness, I didn't regret a thing (okay, maybe I did, but that's not the point). I was on the edge of my seat for everything occurring, swooning into a mount of pillows every five seconds, basically dying over all the new characters and AHHHH, it was beautiful. And you know what? I just thought of the perfect word for this, ish= mefallingforeverythingin400pagesofnearperfection (I'm so smart-) The writing ... It's Stephanie Garber, y'all. She could describe a man with pale rock skin and vampires with glowing muscles and I would believe that ish like it was hot chocolate and I was, well, me. There is no way, and I mean this sincerely, no way at all that any other author would've been able to describe Jacks as a fallen angel in such a way that I would want to die early so he could carry me to paradise. I'm not dead, but I might as well have been with all the help my respiratory system gave me when dresses were described. Want a candy apple, ruffled, knee-length dress with the scent of baby powder and dandruff? Yeah, me neither. But Garber tells me that THAT is the fashion in the 'magic' world? HAHAHAHAAHA, does anybody have some dandruff to spare? It was mouthwatering, and honestly... boo, teach me how to write like that, because hot dang! I need some of that 'SPWICE'. (have you gotten tired of me yet? Oh well, because now you're really going to. Pfft) Unto the characters because my peace of mind has been on edge lately and I have to exorcise them from my memory. All but one, of course. I liked the Bell. The MC was just as expected. Annoying and very kind. I suppose I should've started with kind, but ugh, her decisions made me question if I was actually as dumb as I thought. Hi, hello, my name's Evangeline and I have like, pink hair and like, let's just free my ex from the clutches of a supernatural creature and like, pretend he's not going to kill me or anything. Oh! And pretend he loved me as much as I loved him, so I could pray to a vicious Fate in return of making Luc with Luve love me again. And also, I truly believe in love at first sight. Bruh, nuh-uh. I can stand you being all whiny because of Luc, I truly understood half of what you were feeling. But you were expecting a PRINCE, to fall for you, (and no, I don't mean Prince of Hearts) just because of a kiss? Technically he did, but that's not what I mean- Do I believe she could've been a smarter, better MC? Absolutely. However, she was actually pretty nice at times and I liked her for the majority of the story. Yes, I'm aware I contradicted myself. It's part of my charm, *snort*. The background characters , as always with Garber, were flawless. And flawfull, but that's okay too. I loved them either way and would break them down one by one, but I need to get to my future husband real quick- JACKS . Oh dear, that was loud. Jackkkksssssssss. Hello, dahling. I bet you're feeling mighty bored with Eva so if you could, maybe, give me a call? I don't mind Fates, and I certainly don't mind you... CAN I HEAR A 'YES, DUDE' FROM THE BACK? The amount of fangirling comments, and status updates I made throughout the whole book, made me really appreciate those people that have stayed with me for this long. This man, gorgeous being, ethereal monster, delicious buffet, everything spicy and oh so very nice, was just what my heart needed. You, Jacks, are living in my brain rent-free. You've changed my genetic code, you blubicious moron. Instead of DNA, I have INJ (I need Jacks). Now my blood type isn't vcfty7, now it's YRUSOINFURIATINGLYPERFECT. You've ruined me, Prince of Hearts. And I would willingly let you do it all over again- CUT CUT, LET'S MOVE ON, PEOPLE. Okay, okay, he was perfect. Swoony, and I adored how we got to see this new side of him. The caring, albeit crueler side. The side that made me understand him so much better and made me fall for him ever so quickly. Books and letters and paragraphs don't do him justice. He just is, and he exists in his own world of Magic. "This close, he was undeniably attractive, and taller than she’d realized. He gave her a real smile, revealing a pair of dimples that briefly made him look more angel than devil. But she imagined even angels would need to beware of him. She could picture him flashing those deceptive dimples as he tricked an angel into losing its wings just so he could play with the feathers. “It’s you,” she whispered. “You’re the Prince of Hearts.” (no crap, Sherlock) *crying in the distance* On a closing note, this review has been long enough, I think. Long enough for me to understand that I'm just not getting over it, anytime soon. AHAHAHAHA, I'm hurting right now. The plot was amazing, it had flaws, yes, but I accepted them nonetheless. The writing was tearfully shocking, worldbuilding= delightful, characters= life-threatening. And guess what! NO ROMANCE IN THE FIRST BOOK. Those steamy scenes really did make up for them because oh hollyyyyy nighhhhttttt- I was drenched in sweat. If you haven't gotten tired, you could continue reading for more fangirling bouts and insanity talk! ............................ This was staggeringly magnificent, and right now I'm daydreaming about all the ways I can kindly threaten ask the author for an ARC for a book that doesn't exist yet. I'm totally in love, and I have I idea what to do with my life. Typical of Stephanie’s style of story telling, Once is beautiful, lyrical, fast paced, surprising, romantic and filled with twists and turns. Jacks is... well, he is everything you want him to be. This book solidifies Stephanie as one of the most creative and imaginative story tellers I’ve ever read and I can’t wait for others to read this MAGICAL book!

“Do you stare at everyone like that, or just me?” Jacks looked up. No, just you Jacks. Not just Evangeline, we are all guilty of that crime. *ahem* okay can I just say I was misssiiing Caraval world so much and this book was everything I wanted? Okay maybe not everything. I had some problems. This one felt awfully similar to Legendary and some part of Finale. The relationship between Jacks and Evangeline felt like a repetition of Tella and Dante at some points. I don’t know if it's just me or the author actually tried to write the same thing all over again. Jacks continuously manipulating Evangeline (which is a typical Jacks things to do) but still it was too much similar to Dante in Legendary. I expected Jacks to be idk...maybe a bit different? But well, it's just book one. So I guess we will see something different in the upcoming books. Even though Jacks's and Evangeline's plotline felt similar to the previous books, I still loved them more than any other couple. Maybe I'm being biased but can you blame me when he said, “I didn’t think you cared.” “I don’t. But you still owe me one more kiss, and until I collect it, you’re mine, and I do not like to share.” KILL ME NOW WHY DON'T YOU also, this: “I’m curious about a lot of things. I’m curious about you, but I don’t want you to bite me!” The corner of Jacks’s mouth twitched. “I’ve already done that, Little Fox.” Please I- I actually didn’t like Evangeline at first? She felt like a crybaby and a awful mess. But eventually she grew on to me. as long as she doesn’t hurt Jacks I'm okay with her. Actually, at some points I did find her kind of badass. “You sound jealous.” “If you think I’m jealous because someone else got to stab you, then you’re right.” See? I swear if these two doesn’t end up I will burn the whole world and move to Mars instead. Ignore this part if you like Tella. I HATE HER. I FUCKING HATE TELLA SO MUCH! Jacks is so heartbroken and he didn’t deserve what she did to her. He can do so so much better! I still can't believe Stephanie Garber made her Jacks's one true love. Please no. Tell me this is a lie. Jacks deserves so so much better! And I hope he gets the happy ending he deserves. Also, can I get a deal with Jacks for the second book? Like right now? “maybe she just likes me more than she likes you.” “She hates me,” Jacks said pleasantly. “So even if she likes you more, that’s not saying very much.” “Are you certain about that?” Shut up!! You are exposing all of us with that one line.

This is an intelligent, heartfelt, modern, detailed and delicious, Grimm brothers fairytale with a magical mystery novel twist. (Did I throw enough descriptive words in there to intrigue you?) Seriously though, don’t miss out on this book!!! I was so grateful to receive an ARC of this book from the publisher, but this review was written of my own volition.

In any case, I requested this on NG because it was shiny. The cover was beautiful, the title was intriguing, the blurb was engaging. But, embarrassingly, I knew nothing else about what I was getting into. Which says far more about me than the book, because the author is a massive phenomenon in YA. It’s just I don’t tend to read a lot of YA. Anyway, it turns out that while this book broadly stands alone, it’s set in the same world as the author’s previous, wildly successful trilogy, and there’s some crossover of characters and events—to the extent that apparently some of the happenings in Once Upon A Broken Heart are spoilers for what goes down in Caraval. To give the author credit, I felt lost only occasionally, and only mildly, though a few references did go over my head and I got the general sense that probably this book would be a meaningful experience if you’d read the others. I absolutely don’t blame the book for this. It was entirely on me. The other piece of context I was lacking that seemed important was connected to the male lead. He’s a Fate, which, as far as I could tell, are kind of … not quite gods, not quite faery, magical beings who once the ruled world before being sealed in a deck of cards. Anyway, the relevant Fate here is Jacks, also known as The Prince of Hearts. And I think it’s pretty telling that reviews from people who read the previous trilogy are all “OMG IT’S JACKS’ BOOK” and I’m like “who is this psychotic dickhead, I hope I’m not supposed to feel sorry for him, oh Jesus Christ, I think he’s the romantic lead.” So I am not Jacks’ biggest fan. I’m sure he’s deeply tragic and blah blah but I’m nearly forty. I cannot be doing with YA romantic leads. Seriously, the last YA I read, the hero was literally a mass murderer. WHAT IS WITH THIS? I mean, I know dark romance is a thing that exists for adults and, in all honesty, I’m not mad keen on it. But I really do think the average YA romantic lead could knock all those BDSM mafia dudes into a cocked hat with an arch of their exquisite serial killer eyebrows. I should also note that I’m absolute not ragging on the genre, or YA writers, or teenage girls for this. Being a teenager is scary enough, I imagine being a teenage girl sucks beyond all reason: I can absolutely see why, in that context, stories about terrible men with extraordinary powers who can, in fact, ultimately be controlled, morally and emotionally, by a YA protagonist are needed, meaningful and valuable. But Jacks. Holy balls, what a shithead. And, to be fair to the book, I got the sense that it also felt Jacks was a shithead. It’s just I also felt the book thought he was a secretly romantic shithead. And I thought he was a common or garden shithead shithead. He treats the heroine, like super badly. Super super badly. And, again, to be fair, she recognises it and does not, in fact, find it appropriate or attractive. It’s just Jacks himself is terribly terribly attractive (to her), and one of the main characteristics of heroine is hope: always hoping for the love, for happiness, for people to be governed by their better natures, rather than their worst. It makes her very endearing. I liked her. BUT GET AWAY FROM JACKS, GIRL. FAR FAR AWAY. Massive side-eye at Jacks aside, I enjoyed the almighty fuck out of this book. It is A RIDE. This slightly mind-boggling juxtaposition of whimsy and darkness, coupled with a willingness To Go There TM, that left me genuinely uncertain where it was going or what was about to happen next. I mean, in a good way. In an exciting, dangerous-feeling way that is actually pretty hard to find. Not in a “oh, genre books are so predictable, man” way, just that there’s something legitimately fresh-feeling about Garber’s take on fairytales, history, and myth. The book starts off with a bargain, transitions through a Cinderella riff, detours into a murder mystery and ends up at a prophecy. Like I said, A RIDE. Plus, it was a nice change to spend time with a genuinely idealistic and romantic heroine. I will say, it means she makes a lot of mistakes, trusting when she definitely shouldn’t trust, taking chances she definitely shouldn’t take, but it always felt like a choice—a choice to hope—rather than blind stupidity or plot necessity. I will say, the pacing was occasionally a little uneven, and that the heroine, Evangeline Fox, and Jacks are by far the most vividly painted characters in the book. Everyone else fulfilled their roles, but felt a little one-note compared to Evangeline and Jacks. Especially since at three of the other men are literally under love curses for most of the page count, so it’s hard to get a sense of who they are. This is especially true of Luc, Evangeline’s first love, the one who broke her heart and led her to make her disastrous bargain with The Prince of Hearts in the first place. On the one hand, I appreciated that A Man What Did Her Wrong wasn’t allowed to de-centre Evangeline in her own story, but it did mean that the intense emotions that drove her to Jacks (the ones that motivate the entire action of the novel) always felt a little abstract and distant. Also there’s no getting away from the fact that Once Upon A Broken Heart has a serious case of first-book-in-a-series. It ends on a ginormous emotional twist plus cliff hanger and ARGH. And while I think there’s a lot of interesting themes feeding into the story—I think it might be, and I bloody well hope it is, building up to a deconstruction of the whole concept of “one twu wuv” which I am oh so very here for—they still feel very much like seedlings at the point the book ends, and I’m still not entirely surely if they were definitely there or I was just imagining (and wanting) them. Strongly recommended for people who like this kind of YA (which apparently I do). I am already absolutely desperate for the second, and will be reading the first trilogy stat. It’s always bit ridiculous to come massively late to something that is already the biggest ever hit, being like “well, this is all right, innit?”. Except it really is all right. Very very exceptionally all right and I loved it. But sweet goddamn Evangeline needs a better love interest.

I really enjoyed the first two Caraval books and their whimsical atmosphere and magic. I never could get into the last one though, but this book was really perfect and I found myself not lost at all. You truly don’t need to read Caraval to love this series. This book opened up a bit unexpected for me, right before the events of Legend 4.5/5 “I’d give you the world if I could. You truly don’t need to read Caraval to love this series. This book opened up a bit unexpected for me, right before the events of Legendary actually. There’s a large time gap that did make it a bit hard to pick up from but this book is insanely fast paced. The pacing is simply perfect and the chapter lengths are also perfect. I sped through this book without even knowing it and I was honestly so sad I had reached the end when I did. This story is whimsical and fairytale like. It has this writing that just sucks you in, lyrical in some ways and straightforward in others but it is definitely atmospheric. The magnificent North is such a cool place and I definitely prefer it to wherever Caraval took place (some kingdom??). The slight world building is very clever as the North is known for being cursed in peculiar ways- essentially, some stories and history can never leave it’s borders (no one outside knows these stories) and more often than not, the stories that do get out are often cursed so no one can remember how they end- even in the North it’s a mystery. The history of the Valors and how they have magical arches is so so cool and I’m very intrigued over what the truth really is. She just wanted someone to want her the way Jacks had wanted this girl. And she didn’t want it to be because of a spell or a curse. Evangeline wanted a real love powerful enough to break a spell. I’ll be honest and say Evangeline annoyed me for probably 75% of this book. She was naive to an absurd point at the start, and her actions throughout the book until the last quarter left me so mad. But she was also really endearing in a unique way, kind of like how you can’t help but love close friends despite their dumb decisions. She was honestly so kind and hopeful I can’t help but really admire her strength in knowing how will find a happier ever after (something similar with Jacks 👀👀). And the ending has me very curious for where her character will go now that she is a bit less naive but still with her core qualities. His lips curved into a devastating smile that on anyone else might have looked inviting or flirtatious, as if throwing a knife at her feet and daring her to stab him was the equivalent of asking her to dance. JACKS MY LOVE. Wow okay so in Legendary I really could have cared less for Jacks, oops. He just annoyed me I supposed. But after this book I need more of him! He honestly made me hate Tella a bit for what she did to him. I really hope she isn’t his actual one true love because he deserves better 😭 I wish we had more of him but the mystery around him definitely makes him more interesting. His motives are always in question, he’s morally gray, and simply put, attractive and hot. The last few chapters were we really see more of his personality break through (because he got more cruel á cause de Tella) and it was so so sooo interesting. I love him and am dying for more of him soon :)) The plot was kind of like a fever dream with the vampires added in the last quarter, and overall the marriages and engagements and love potions made it really dramatic. But I have to say I loved how it read like a literal fairytale with the drama. The plot overall is pretty simple and I enjoyed this fact, and I’m very excited for how it will become more complex in the sequel! The dynamic of Evangeline and Jacks didn’t really come forth until the last 10 chapters ish. During that time I loved them. The rest of the book Jacks carries their interactions. But I can definitely see a romance possibly coming, and I guess the lack of kissing between jacks and Evangeline and real romance overall maybe made me enjoy it less. But the almost kiss not quite scene was hot because of Jacks (and one of my favourites in the book). And the ending?? Who unlocked the door? And I know which door it is which means lots of things that only make the plot thicken. So so sooo excited for the sequel and idk how I’ll wait a year I need it ASAP. She knew her story had the potential for infinite endings—and that belief hadn’t changed. There was a happy ending waiting for her.

I KNEW THIS BOOK WAS ABOUT JACKS!!!!!!!! FINALLY, after all this time we will find out what really happened to Jacks. HE IS BACKKKKKKKK!!!!!! “For it was also said the Prince Of Hearts was not capable of love because his heart had stopped beating long ago. Only one person could make it beat again: his one true love. They said his kiss had been fatal to all but her - his only weakness - and as he’d sought her, he’d let a trail of corpses.” Fingers crossed for Jacks not to get his heart broken again b I KNEW THIS BOOK WAS ABOUT JACKS!!!!!!!! But one word- absolutely whimsical💔✨ * * * UPDATE- *NON-SPOILER* This book is so special to me because 1) I won it from none other than Stephanie Garber herself 2) I am one of the very first readers of this book so I will cherish it forever (thanks to Stepahnie Garber for putting up with my 4658 questions lol) "All the stories are made of both truths and lies, what matters is the way that we believe in them" OUABH is a book about bad decisions, unrequited loves and broken hearts involving an unusual girl who believes in happy endings and a dark Prince who is unlike anyone one from your average Fairytale. Let me start by applauding how the author connected the storylines of Craval and OUABH without actually interconnecting it, which means -you definitely do not have to read Caraval to read OUABH even though the events from the Caraval series leads to OUABH BUT the story allows the fans of Caraval to feel the nostalgia. THE PLOT: The plot is classic Stephanie Garber- whimsy, secretive, full of twists. It’s a Fairytale of its own with elements like prophesies, secret doors, curses, dangerous bargains, mysterious archways and poisoned kisses (literally). The pacing is brilliant and the writing is quite fluid, you will start it and before you know it you are half way through the book, it’s entrancing in that sense. I loved how she tied up all loose ends without any loop holes and can't believe how much story she immaculately packed into this book Evangeline Fox's utter desperation leads her to knock on a magical door to make a fated bargain with the Prince of Heart that changes her story forever but the problem? She doesn't know if it has a happy ending like she always dreamed of, an unexpected journey to the "Magnificent North" brings her face to face with a fate that is tangled up with a prophecy, every choice she has to make has a chance to either push away her happy ending or bring it closer, her character is a personification of the quote- How far are you willing to go for a happy ending? THE CHARACTERS: Evangeline would always ask her mother to just tell her how she thought the story ended. But her mother always refused. "I believe there are far more possibilities than happily ever after or tragedy.Every story has the potential for infinite endings" We meet completely new characters other than Jacks obviously with a little cameo from everyone’s favorite’s 😉Evangeline will grow on you eventually, she starts off as this Naive girl who can’t resist herself from making uncanny bargains but always believes in hope and happy endings. She has a beautiful character arc that I thoroughly enjoyed reading, I cannot wait to see her character bloom in the future books While Jacks is jacks, you can’t help but feel all the emotions in the book for this broody guy "He was a thousand cuts happening all at once.Devastation made of hair as blue as dark ocean waves, and lips sharp as cracked glass that would delightedly cut her" this book only made me love Jacks even more than I already do- he is a Damon Salvatore of Caraval universe, his snark , careless ease adds a dramatic flair to the story. I may be biased when I say this but I am even more intrigued about Jacks storyline than Evangeline's especially with THAT ending! Oh yah Of course it ended in a cliff hanger breaking my heart ;) OVERALL- it’s an experience like getting this one time opportunity to step into a spell binding Fairy tale and to completely get lost in it. In three words - Impressive, Immersive and as always incredibly Imaginative

It takes place in the world of Caraval after the events of Finale and follows a new character in a different part of the world. You don't have to have read the first trilogy to read this one, though I would recommend doing so. Thanks to Stephanie and her editor, I was able to read a bound manuscript of this book, so I won't be giving too many plot details. I absolutely LOVED this book, and you best be sure once the semester ends and I get home, I'll be rereading the Caraval trilogy. The worlds and lore Stephanie creates are just so rich and atmospheric; ballgowns and fairytales and magic and spells and princes... it's just Isabella candy, is what it is. I also loved our pink-haired heroine Evangeline. I feel like she's a departure from the heroines we're used to seeing in YA; she's just so lovely and optimistic and genuinely good. She sees the best in everyone, and believes so wholeheartedly in fairytales and true love and happily ever after in such a way that you can't help but also believe in these things. And in the world we currently live in, having a character that turns you into a believer is an extraordinary gift.

I finished this book yesterday. Once Upon a Broken Heart is the first book in an enthralling new fantasy series from "Caraval" author Stephanie Garber. I haven't read her Caraval series yet, so I had no idea what this book would be like. Shockingly, from the first chapter, I was so engrossed in the story that I didn't even realize I had read 60% in one sitting. This captivating story has adventure, mystery, betrayal, chemistry, jealousy, curse, magic, deception and believes in truelove. Just per I finished this book yesterday. My only issue is the main protagonist Evangeline Fox, her character portrayed too naively. Every time she made the wrong decision, I turned off my Kindle screen and screamed, "Stupid woman, are you blind? Or are you a tube light?". You can say I was that much invested into her character. It's a good thing, 😉right!? Whatsoever, towards the end of the book, the wheel of her brain seemed to turn a little. And The Prince of Hearts?! He is a complete mysterious puzzle. To solve it, we need to know his point of view, unfortunately that was not in this first book. Overall, I really enjoyed the author's writing style and her imaginary world. And the way the book ended, Oh God, 😭I'm dying to read the second book. It will haunt me ’til the next book comes out.

It was such a joy to plunge myself into the world of Caraval once again. However I feel that it would be a disservice to both the series to compare them. Caraval is an immersive story with enchanting romances, a mysterious game, sprinkled with plot twists that catch us unaware whereas Once Upon a Broken Heart is all about love- love most unexpected- the kind that sneaks upon us slowly, we don’t quite realise that we are ~in love~ until we’re filled with it. In Caraval, the MC’s tumble headfirst in love, thinking they have locked their heart but in OUaBH our MC- Evangeline walks towards love with open arms and embraces it. Both the series are entirely different but I would highly recommend that you read the Caraval trilogy before you pick this one up! Please note that my review (and this trilogy) contains heavy spoilers for the Caraval trilogy! I truly feel that OUaBH is all about true love and “happily ever after’s” and that our “happily ever after” might be different from the one that we initially envisioned. The story is split into three parts and accordingly I have split my rating: Part 1- 4.5 stars Part 2- 4.25 stars Part 3-4.25 stars “Heroes don't get happy endings. They give them to other people.” So what’s this book about? Evangaline, our protagonist, had grown up believing in true love and happily ever after’s. She is dismayed when she is told that the love of her life, is engaged to another-her stepsister- The story begins by her hunting for the Prince of Hearts (Jacks), a legendary Fate known for his fatal kisses. Evangaline strikes a seemingly innocent bargain with Jacks to stop the wedding and in return promises him three kisses of his choice. The Fates are the magical beings of the world who had ruled until a witch trapped them in a deck of cards a few centuries ago. The first few chapters of Part 1 take place before the events of Legendary and the rest of the story after the events of Finale. “All stories are made of both truths and lies, [...] What matters is the way that we believe in them.” My favourite aspect of this story -besides the romance- is the world building. In Caraval we got a taste of the world but in this book Garber has taken time to explore the deliciously magical world, create rules and a history that intrigued me. There are also subtle references and appearances from Scarlett and Tella which my Caraval-loving heart delighted in! I went in this book knowing nothing but the blurb and that made my experience 10x better! I don’t want to spoil anything as most of the enjoyment lies in the twists so I’m being extremely vague. “Everyone lies—people think I’m more likely to help if they’re after something noble like true love.” Also, I must confess: I was rooting for Jacks throughout this book. I adore Evangaline but Jacks is my real love because of three reasons. a)his one-liners! b)y’all know i’m trash for morally grey characters c)nostalgia from Caraval. I feel that Garber has toned down on the descriptions but has still retained her lovely lyrical prose. I’m a complete quote reader and the writing in this book was so reminiscent of Caraval. The romance was fantastic but I prefer the romance of the Caraval trilogy to this book, to be honest. I love Jacks so much but Evangeline fell a little flat for me. I liked her character but in the first few chapters she was just so naive?? Her character development was phenomenal though! I can’t wait to read more about her in the sequel! Once Upon a Broken Heart is a wonderful, whimsical fantasy with an intricate world building, all around true love, fairytales and “happily ever after’s”. The ending pretty much killed me!!! I cannot talk of this book anymore before dissolving into a rambling, spoilery mess! So, please note that the rest of my review contains MAJOR spoilers for this book! - - - - I should’ve guessed the ending sjdksdksd! It’s Jacks we’re talking about! Of-fking-course he would do something like that!! But I cannot bring myself to hate him!! Anyways, I’m doing a spoilery character breakdown! Jacks was not her friend, but he’d taught her that she could open any door she wanted, and Evangaline knew exactly which door she needed to open next. ✩ Evangaline: As I said before, her character fell a little flat for me and her naivety frustrated me to no ends! But the ending? I wonder which door she opened. I feel that she’s going to become cold hearted by the sequel and I am so ready for it! Can y’all imagine what perfection it would be if Evangaline was as ruthless as Jacks by the sequel! They would be (one of) my OTPs’! ✩ Jacks: I loved every moment of this scheming, lying, ruthless Fate. His character is complex and you genuinely feel that he will “go there” . I love morally grey characters you can’t help but fall for and Jacks was no exception. I just know that his character is going to be everything in the sequel and I am so ready for it! Jacks really surprised me in this one but that was honestly my fault. He hasn’t changed one bit from Finale! Hearing Jacks talk about Tella broke my heart! I definitely ship Tella/Legend but I can’t help feel sorry for Jacks! ✩ LaLa: hi i’d like to report theft of my heart. LaLa completely stole my heart and I’m in love with her dhksddajsdj. The plot twist about her being the Unwed Bride left me speechless and was one of the highlights in this book! Her friendship with Evangaline is so precious (there is *no* girl-on-girl hate, thank the Fates!) and I’m intrigued to see more of their dynamic- and whether it will change after Jacks’ betrayal- In the North, fairytales and history were treated as one and the same because their stories and histories were all cursed. Some tales couldn’t be written down without bursting into flames, others couldn’t leave the North, and many changed every time they were shared, becoming less and less real with every retelling. ✩ Apollo: I knew that something was fishy about his insta-love with Evangaline lol. That was one of the reasons part 2 fell flat for me. The way Evangaline just accepted it was too?? Frustrating? Idk. I didn’t expect to feel anything for him but I was surprisingly sorry when he died. Apollo was just another pawn in the Jacks-Evangaline game. ✩ Morella: this was so freaking obvious asdfghjklasdfgj. I felt tempted to hit Evangaline with a pan when she believed Morella to be innocent. the stepsisters are always the villains you foolish girl! ✩ Tiberius: Also kinda obvious? I liked his character in the start though. ✩ Scarlett & Tella: I lived for their cameo appearance! I’m hoping that Julian and Legend will be in the sequel! (also please tell me that Legend/Dante’s name will be revealed to us lol) “I don’t think you and I have the same definition of hurt.” “Be thankful for that, Little Fox.” [...] “Hurt is what made me” However I *do* have some quibbles. -there is barely any diversity I know that LaLa is brown skinned but there is barely any mention of black skinned & queer (LGBTQ+) characters. A gay couple of briefly mentioned but that’s about it. -Chaos being a vampire I’m not too sure how I feel about the inclusion of vampires in this series, blending it a little with the paranormal genre. While there are slightly different rules the paranormal aspect definitely felt a little weird to me! Also in the Caraval trilogy it is mentioned that Chaos is a Lesser Fate however in this book, Chaos is said to be the oldest of them all. I realise that this is just me nit-picking lol. -the slight abrupt transitions I adore this story but I felt that certain twists and transitions were too sudden. For one, I personally found Evangaline being the ambassador a little sudden + the twist at the end that Tiberius was alive. The twist at the end just didn’t shock me -i didn’t foresee it though- and I wasn’t fazed in the slightest. Despite my dislikes I love this book and you can count on me picking up the next book! The negatives outweigh the positives and two of them (Chaos+abrupt transition) are personal opinions which I doubt will bother readers. You can find me rereading the Caraval trilogy and sobbing over that cliffhanger until the sequel releases! “The fates weren't dangerous because they were evil; the fates were dangerous because they couldn't tell the difference between evil and good.” Storygraph | Blog ------------------------------- review posted 8th October ------------------------------------------- (1st October) WHAT?? THAT'S THE ENDING?? I NEED THE SEQUEL. also the cliffhanger 😭💔 The twists were excellent!! Full RTC once I get over my shock. 4.50 stars! Prereview/ Starting this beauty today! ------- Happy!! Release!! Date!! The cover is so gorgeous! ---- "...that will either end in the greatest happily ever after, or the most exquisite tragedy…" I'm in! This book can't release soon enough! I hope that the others (Scarlett, Tella, Julian and Dante) are in this too! Waiting till 28th September is going to be pure torture. (Also am I the only person who believes that Jacks is pansexual??) The wait for this book is torturous yet I WILL wait for the entire trilogy to release (there's a 90% chance this book will end in a cliffhanger and I simply can't bear THAT! Better to be tortured by the release of a series rather than a cliffhanger.)

“…not all loves happened at first; some took time to grow like seeds, or they might be like bulbs, dormant until the right season approached”. Stephanie Garber’s newest novel introduces us to her fiercest heroine yet. Stephanie Garber’s newest novel introduces us to her fiercest heroine yet. Meet Evangeline Fox- a young woman who believes in love at first sight and wants nothing more than to find her happily ever after. Evangeline has to be my favorite leading lady in quite some time. I imagine that many readers will resonate with her character and quickly come to root for her. She proves herself to be bold, brave, and optimistic no matter the circumstances. At the start of the book, Evangeline crosses paths with the infamous Prince of Hearts and strikes up a bargain with him that sets her on a tumultuous journey for the rest of the story. I was pleasantly surprised at how Garber cleverly managed to connect this book to her previous series- and we may even have a cameo appearance of some of our favorite sisters. For those of you wondering- no, you do not have to read Caraval in order to read and appreciate this book. However, there will definitely be some mild spoilers for you if you choose to do so. My personal recommendation is to read the trilogy in advance if you haven’t... because why wouldn’t you? It’s fantastic! Now… as for Jacks… OH how I’ve missed him! He is still as charming and conniving as we remember. For those of you who were never quite team Jacks, I assure you that this book will change your mind. His interactions with Evangeline were truly the highlights of the story for me. Their banter with one another is equal parts endearing and hilarious. They know how push each other’s buttons and are able to tell one another exactly what they need to hear about themselves- even if the truth can sometimes be hurtful. Ultimately, I adored this book! You know that euphoric feeling you get when re-watching your favorite childhood movies over and over again? That’s exactly how I felt while reading this book. It brought back all my nostalgia for fairytale stories. I promise that you all are in for an absolute treat with this one! It’s filled with so much magic, wonder, and romance. I fully suspect that when this book comes out it will be all everyone is talking about. 4.75*

I’m curious about you, but I don’t want you to bite me!” The corner of Jacks’s mouth twitched. “I’ve already done that, Little Fox.” still kinda thought there’d be more development tho but it is the first book and its a series so i didnt really expect it. still wanted it tho lmfao CHARACTERS ˎˊ˗ jacks : ⤷ my husband. jacks is so hot. lmao i know some people didnt like him in caraval?? i loved him tho and ugh, he just had to be hotter in this book too cmskkg at first, i was kinda iffy with him since he called her ”pet” and i was like… no. if he didnt change that i probably wouldve just left. no but the way he kinda teased her at some parts??? like running his fucking fingers on her neck or some shit like that. gosh it was just great “He moved the hand at her neck to toy with her racing pulse, softly dragging his fingers up and down over the frantic beat-beat-beat, making her heart pound even faster. “I think this excites you.” like cmon. just stop right now fjskfkg still thinks he deserves better and was done dirty in caraval plus even done a little dirty in this book. idk kinda wish there was more reasoning to why he did what he did. there was just so many holes and just not enough of his feelings?? idk evangeline fox: ⤷ she’s alright ig? loook… i mean i dont hate her and a lot of people like her but i just didnt fnskkfkg i found her lowkey annoying and very naïve she definitely did a lot of impulsive things which is fine cause it adds to the story but like still be more smart about it?? she definitely didnt think through most of her decisions and idk kinda threw me off her character i think she’s bold and brave?? she has good intentions but she isnt the brightest character.. but i didnt mind her ig i did wanna scream at things she did cause it was just stupid and who would do that?? i guess she would lmfao CONCLUSION ˎˊ˗ i wouldnt say im underwhelmed?? but it didnt reach my expectations. i just thought this would be like 5 star worthy but it was still fun. it was really easy to read and it wasnt even long lol it just took me forever. ok bye <3
