Miriam is an incredible author and artist, she has talent. This webtoon is epic, I swear. I'd probably read it all over again (very soon). It started out so cute and innocent, but then the author took it to another level. I'm glad I read it after it was finished bc the amount of cliffhangers!! If you're a fan of Harry Potter or anything magic related, really, I recommend this comic for you! Miriam is an incredible author and artist, she has talent. This webtoon is epic, I swear. Hooky was really enjoyable. It had lots of cute moments with some hilarity thrown in. The characters were flawed and I loved that about this book. Usually, Authors want their witches to be perfect and we don't get that here. This author embraced that and it made the story that much more enjoyable. If you loved the webcomic then you'll love this book.

5 stars is not enough to justify my love for this webtoon. The storyline is amazing. Not a single episode is boring and it just makes me want to keep reading and reading. Every character is loveable and cute and I will definitely miss their adventures. But the best aspect of this webtoon (imo) is the art! It is beautiful and magical. The details and backgrounds are *chef's kiss*! It makes me want to draw again. Thank you author for this wonderful story! Will definitely read her future works. Webtoons anniversary event, part 7~ Saving the best for almost last! This is one of the few webtoons I'm rating in advance, because I'm already so fascinated by it. I love it!.... It might even dethrone unOrdinary or whatever the other ones are as my new favorite. The only unfortunate thing is that it will take ages to finish, but honestly, I don't mind, since every episode has way more content than I could ever ask from a Webtoon... the longer it lasts, the better :D At first, I was just a little Webtoons anniversary event, part 7~ Saving the best for almost last! This is one of the few webtoons I'm rating in advance, because I'm already so fascinated by it. I love it!.... It might even dethrone unOrdinary or whatever the other ones are as my new favorite. The only unfortunate thing is that it will take ages to finish, but honestly, I don't mind, since every episode has way more content than I could ever ask from a Webtoon... the longer it lasts, the better :D At first, I was just a little bemused, since its first few episodes were pretty chaotic; it was a mishmash of random events, fairytale references, and a pretty goofy art style. But once it settled down... oh, it just took off. We're constantly reminded that they're just children; there's a lot of teasing, fast-paced scenes with jokes and little importance (other than to make me SAD), childhood crushes, and petty grudges. Nobody is perfect, and they can often be irrational and rude for reasons that make sense only to themselves. But they're direct; maybe that's the author's style speaking, or maybe it's just because they're young, but it holds nothing back. Usually, reading distracting shenanigans is just annoying to me because it's just stalling from advancing the main story. (Pretty obviously too..) But... It strikes a great balance between the good times and the bad times. I love fantasy, it's pretty much all I read, so I'm definitely biased, but everything ties together so well. There's a lot of pain they cause each other, and even themselves, because of their decisions, but I can't help but empathize since I can easily see myself doing the same thing. And at the same time, the terrible destiny that chases them the entire time threatens to overthrow all of it. Watching how they cope with it, and hopefully overcome it is something I apprehensively look forward to. (view spoiler)[ Welcome to the spoiler section! If you're here, it means you've already read it and know all about thisLSDFLSDKF it's so good it's hard to hold it all in when you're trying not to ruin anything for anyone who might see it. I've only just gotten to the part where the witches storm the castle at the party, and oh my god poor Dani Watching Dani change has been both cute and heartbreaking at the same time, she has such bright spirits, but not to the point of blind optimism... When she broke down in front of Mark I DIED (but his reaction was perfect, I felt that). Everyone wants her to do magic, or understand how cool magic can be, but from her perspective, it really is just too dangerous. I'm not sure what I'd do if I were her, but that's half the fun of reading. The last episode had a straight up TRAUMA moment I wasn't ready omg Alex no Dorian, skilled with magic, socially a mess, prideful, a little selfish sometimes, and easily makes mistakes but also strangely self-aware. I have a love-hate relationship with him, kind of like reading unOrdinary and being hurt when someone you love does something incredibly dumb, but I can't help but relate a little. Okay, maybe a lot. If I'd had a whole family of angry witches on my back, I might understand. I just really hope he doesn't become the King of Witches. I'd actually cry I don't want this review to wind on forever, but I could go on for hours on how much I love this webtoon, the setting, the characters in it, everything. Monica went from a slightly obnoxious princess to the heroine she'd been reading about so much, not quite but almost unexpectedly. It was cool watching her transform after everything she went through, and her complicated friendship with Dorian is humorous, but also kind of sad because of the lies on both sides. Nico is stubborn and kind of dumb sometimes, but he's a good guy, and after hearing what happened to him, it's hard to blame him. And Mark is such a big lovable oaf oh my god`l.1-= (hide spoiler)] It was almost like watching the Webtoon grow up as its characters did. I think the author herself confessed it started as just a fun doodle, and then grew into something more as she kept drawing them more and more. It's rare to read something that feels as genuine as Hooky does, and if anything bad happens to one of the characters I'd love I'd probably just die on the spot. I'm surprised it hasn't gotten that sidetracked so far, every twist so far has been gripping, and I'm perpetually anxious waiting for something bad to happen that I don't want but know is coming. If you ever have a chance, you should absolutely read Hooky. God, if you've already read it, read it again SLFDKKLSKF it's so packed- wait wow it's sold in print too? hold on a moment "I'm bad at hugging, but I'm even worse with words." -Mark, and now me

Two witch twins make friends and learn about their powers while fighting for good against evil in this cute comic/graphic novel. I liked the art, but the story/plot was just okay. To be honest, the story kind of felt chaotic and like it just kept throwing in random things. The underlying plot could have been really interesting, but the author just didn't explore a bigger picture instead of small everyday witch things. Today I finally received my copy of the first volume AND I SCREAMED. Listen, I’ve been following this comic for years back when it was still getting published every week on Webtoon and I just love it. So much. The plot is lovely, the characters are amazing, the drawings are spectacular. There’s something I just love about Míriam Bonastre’s style and yes, I realized I’ve said “love” countless times, but seriously. Y’all should give Hooky a chance, you won’t regret it.

While the story is juvenile, it fits the whimsical art style perfectly. The book is supposed to be for a younger audience so I understand the pace and the way some characters act. Despite that, Miriam Bonastre Tur creates in depth characteristics and makes the characters seem real. She doesn't make children act like adults nor the other way around. If she creates a child character, he or she acts like a child. This book had good original character design and the art was absolutely lovely. In Hooky we are following a set of young twin witches, Dorian and Dani. Dani is our athletic witchy girl but does struggle with performing spells. Dorian is a bookworm, a bit antisocial, clumsy, but absolutely phenomenal with magic. We meet them on the first page missing the bus to magic school which you can only arrive at/know the location of if you are on the bus. Thus, they go on the quest to find a magical tutor. Throughout their time, they soon learn that the witches are turning against humans and will kill the king to replace him with the "king of witches" (should be monarch of witches or something because they often refer that it could be a female as well, but you get the gist). It is announced that Dani and/or Dorian are highly likely to be this monarch, even though they appear to be good. We also have a few side characters that are so much fun. Princess Monica, Damien, Will, Mark, and Nico. We even get to meet a fire-breathing frog (Toad?) named Carlo! The characters are such a blast to learn about and I loved this book and need the next one IMMEDIATELY THANK YOU!

I’m so beyond glad that I decided to read this comic on impulse because it was fantastic! The art style is gorgeous and the characters are adorable! The story goes cute and carefree to hella dark surprisingly quick. The world building is beautiful and the humor is genuinely funny. Even though it’s marketed as a young reader’s graphic novel, it’s really something all ages can appreciate. Overall, great story so far, cannot wait for the next installment to come out!

This was an incredible story that lead me to seek out the original webcomic because I HAD to know how it ended. Little did I know that there would be at least 2 more volumes worth of content (arguably 3!) to read through. The art? Incredible. The writing? Incredible. The ending?! INCREDIBLE, OH MY GOD. (Both the first volume and the entire story have powerful endings!) I love witch stories and this is a stellar example.

Note: edited because I couldn't quite put my finger on what was bothering me here before, but I thought about it and now I can :). People actually die, there's quite some horrible stuff going on and it's covered up by this deceptively cute style and the cutesy side-stories. I actually liked how innocent the story started but wasn't afraid to let something seriously messed up hit the fan more and more frequently. The only big downside of this book is that you can really notice it's a web-comic, or at least it has some downsides of webtoons: it foreshadows some random things and has a general idea of where it's going and its characters, but it doesn't know entirely how or when to deliver that development and story. It doesn't foreshadow or build-up where it matters, doesn't keep pacing and mood in mind. You're constantly mood-whiplashed as a reader. The pacing of the plot is all over the place and the stories they decide to tell feel almost random at times, making this a very chaotic read. You have this constant double-take moment where you're like "oh, ok, I guess we're doing this now?" as if the author tells you whatever they feel like telling you about the story at that point. The climax/end of this book suffers especially from it, because it builds up to a climax, then suddenly ends without its climax, then does a random fun in-between part and then we suddenly go to a new climax event. The second climax falls a bit short because of the wacky build-up and pacing. Fortunately the art is pretty much perfect and the characters are fun. The characters are very cutely drawn and have varying lovely personalities. The art is so vibrant and detailed and forms a cohesive piece of artwork on every page, I can only admire it. It's also amazing to me this comic has as many pages as a regular novel, it took me a while to read.

I received a copy from Clarion Books/HMH Children's Books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Dani and Dorian, twins, are excited to start the new school year. There’s just one problem: they missed the bus, and the location of the magic school is top secret. Instead of going home, they decide to stay with their aunt and have her teach them magic all year. Instead of going home, they decide to stay with their aunt and have her teach them magic all year. Things seem to be going well with their aunt until things take a turn for the worse when they get dubbed as traitors to all witches. Hunted and on the run, they find themselves studying under a soothsayer and befriending non-magical folk their parents always forbade them from being in contact with. With the help of their new friends, can their clear their names and see their family again? When I picked this up, I was expecting a cute story about witches. What I didn’t expect is that the characters would be so well developed that I was sad when I reached the final chapter. Initially, we follow Dani and Dorian as they find themselves in a bit of a pickle in the magic community. As the story continues, more characters join them, so we also follow a princess, an orphan, and a popular boy in town. Their personalities clash, but they quickly grow to become close friends running headfirst into adventure after adventure. One of the things that I love about the story is that none of the characters are perfect. We watch each of these characters struggle with their insecurities and focus on their flaws rather than the good. As the story progresses, we watch them form a strong bond and begin to focus on their strengths. We also see them start to realize that they’re stronger as a team, so they need to stop trying to leave each other behind. I loved watching how each of them developed as characters and the messages it sends to young readers. All in all, this was a truly magical read. I’m looking forward to checking out the author’s other works in addition to seeing more of their beautiful artwork.

I received an ARC of this title from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. For anyone else, missing the school bus is just a bad start to the day. Thus begins their adventures as they seek out magical instruction from, well, just about anyone who will take them--so long as mom and dad never find out. What they don't expect is to be branded as traitors to their own kind, to be taken in as apprentices by an odd fortune-telling wizard who can actually see the future, to befriend a princess, a troublemaker, and a coffee-shop waiter.... and to be in the center of a dark prophecy that promises war. "Hooky" is a beautifully written and illustrated tale of fantasy and friendship, with a brilliant balancing act of being light and happy, and dark and serious as the kids deal with prejudice towards witches and a broken kingdom. This is also only the first part of the story, leaving readers on a cliff-hanger of epic proportions (though, fortunately, this originated as a webcomic, so readers will quickly be able to get their hands on what comes next). Perfect for anyone who loves Kiki's Delivery Service, Howl's Moving Castle, Harry Potter, and The Okay Witch, "Hooky" is a fun and addictive graphic novel adventure!

This isn't the complete series, and I feel the need to emphasize this since I was ready to throw hands when I realized that I was being left on a cliffhanger. Also it took me way to incredibly long to realize how the title reflected the story. This is incredibly cute. I really did enjoy reading this. I will definitely be continuing this series, because that is obviously the only option. Especially when it's available on Webtoon for me to dive into immediately. Read this! IT IS SO GOOD. I loved this comic. I think it has some errors but they do not affect the reading at all. As you go on, you fall even more in love with the characters and the story, while what seemed to be a bit of a childish story, grows deeper and we see the characters evolve. I also have to say that the drawing style is beautiful and original, it has many details, something that makes me admire the work of the author much more. Highly recommended. Me encantó este comic!!. Creo que tiene algunos errores pero no I loved this comic. I think it has some errors but they do not affect the reading at all. Recomendadisimo.
