What a cute, fun and intensely smexy read! I absolutely adored Kinsey. Because she’s always been judged by her looks and accent, she’s learned ways to handle it in a way that I totally support and admire all while laughing myself silly. With her southern belle sweet to top off her stark rebuttals, I want to be her! The fact that she was so perfect for Griff due to her own nerdiness had me cheering her on all the way. Griff is that amazing hero that rarely talks. When he does he tends to bumble what he’s trying to say so he tends to do a lot of grunting. While he wasn’t as neanderthal as I expected outside of the bedroom, once things heated up between Kinsey and him, he became one heck of a dirty talker. Oh lord, he was panty melting hot! Add in the fact that he first fell in love with Kinsey’s brain before he ever laid eyes on her, and I had reached my swoon level. There isn’t a lot of drama to this story. Just a touch towards the end. However, it’s filled with the decisions, actions, and reactions of this couple as they wade through a fake dating situation and find themselves falling (or in Griff’s position - having already fallen) in love. I didn’t read the first book and I was never lost or confused, although I’d like to go back and read it just to get more of the Becketts. This family is hilarious. Their interactions had me grinning as they antagonized one another - much like my own family does! Highly recommend this delicious rom-com that not only has lots of heat but plenty of heart as well! Kinsey and Griff are the hottest nerds ever and I was HERE. FOR. IT. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Kinsey is such a kick-ass female lead. She is a prodigy in a STEM field (Chemistry) and her logical mind leads to the most fun verbal take-downs in this book! A smart woman putting idiots in their place is always a good time! Kinsey is also sweet, Southern, curvy, and adorably likable. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ And Griff may be my new Grumpy lead obsession. He is epically nerdy and smart, while also physically dominating in the boxing ring and fiercly protecting his family. And also...DIRTY TALK FOR DAYS. But we also get to see his vulnerability as this story progresses and I loves his character arc. I may have to put "Hot Sex in the Lego Room" on my bucket list. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 𝐍𝐄𝐀𝐍𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐋 has great friendships, strong (and also crappy) family relationships, and complex characters who you will fall in love with. There is a LOT of time spent with the main characters and their respective families, hashing things out, and it bordered on a bit too much for me. However, this also helps establish the story if you are reading this as a standalone. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I really liked this book and can't wait for the next in the series! NOW LIVE! Amazon US * Amazon UK I will never get tired of a growly hero that gets paired with a bubbly, talkative heroine! Griff and Kinsey were amazing together and they had me captivated from the very beginning. We got to see Griff slowly come out of his hard shell and open himself up to Kinsey which was swoon worthy. Especially those moments that he let his vulnerability show. It actually led to some funny moments when Griff just didn't know what to say to Kinsey but kept trying anyway. Overall NOW LIVE! This is one of those books that gets better in the second half, because I really wasn't loving it at the start. Our hero falls in love at first sight, and it was just... a lot. Then we find out that the heroine is "engaged" (a lie she made up years ago), and the hero doesn't know what to do. Once everything was out in the open, this got a lot more playful and I was enjoying the banter. Still not one of my favorites from the author, but it makes a solid addition to this light and sexy series. Once everything was out in the open, this got a lot more playful and I was enjoying the banter. Still not one of my favorites from the author, but it makes a solid addition to this light and sexy series. You don't HAVE to read the series in order for it to make sense, but Mama's Boy does a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of explaining the premise. It was great revisiting this funny family, and I'm looking forward to watching the last man fall. The story follows Griff, a man who is too smart for his own good. He's a tattooed scientist - an intelligent man who looks like a bad boy. He's never quite figured out how to talk to women, so he comes off as a bit of a neanderthal. When Griff meets Kinsey, it's love at first sight - he falls for her brain as well as her looks, and now he's got to convince her to feel the same way. The only problem? Griff believes Kinsey is engaged, and telling him the truth would jeopardize Kinsey's career. As part of a family bet, Kinsey agrees to go on six dates with Griff, and he's hoping it will help him to fall OUT of love with her. Because falling for an engaged woman is out of the question. The "family bet" storyline is kinda complicated, so I'm not going to go into the whole thing here. Just know that it plays a role in the series. This is another low angst, sexy installment and I loved the chemistry between these two. Griff makes a great hero, and I liked the unique storyline. There was just a lot going on, and the instalove was too much for me. Pair that with a "forbidden" romance, and the beginning was pretty off-putting. This managed to win me over by the end, but my rating would probably be lower if grading this as a standalone romance. The series as a whole is what has me hooked, and I'm curious how the final book will play out. I do suggest reading in order, since the books are better together. I received an early copy and am voluntarily leaving a review of this rom com.

Full review to come on Monday!I was so glad to get to read this one. I loved the first book in the series, Mama’s Boy, and was excited to see which of the cousins would fall to love next. Griff was the perfect neanderthal example with his grunts and general overall grumpiness. But it was perfect when love actually zoomed in and caught him, right away. And in a way, you could say it actually knocked him off his feet, lol. I loved how Kinsey was a mile a minute chatterer. I definitely could relate to that, when I’m nervous my talking speeds up, although mine might not be quite as coherent and intelligent as her actual words were. Oh, and I love that she had a Meemaw. Before The Big Bang Theory I’d never heard that term, but I loved it! There was also one moment in the book when I was a little appalled that Griff would take perfect bbq that was Kansas City style and add other lesser flavors to it, but I’m all for experimenting I guess, so maybe it was good? Sorry, that was my native Kansas Citian loyalty there. These two were perfect for each other. While there were still some of the same types of misunderstandings in this one as annoyed me a bit in the first one, and that I get bugged by in so many romance books, they flowed well enough and the the way the author had the characters overcome them made up for it in my mind. Even the final big misunderstanding was fixed pretty quickly and in a perfect way to make up for that being the final conflict. I loved the family members, Dixon and Nash, and even Griff’s sister Morgan. I kind of hope that the author will give Morgan her own story at some point. I’m also so ready for Nash’s story now! Like Griff, I’m pretty sure Nash is up to something. Of course I’m still so curious about what is in that final gift from their grandmother, and I wonder what they’ll do if Nash falls in love too. I mean, is the bet just who is the last? Because if so, it doesn’t seem fair that they let him wait to be last with getting set up on dates. Anyway, I’m guessing those questions I have as well as any others will be answered in the next book, Mansplainer. Review first posted on Lisa Loves Literature.

I loved that he loved Kinsey’s “sexy brain.” He’s absolutely endearing. The chemistry between Griff and Kinsey is great and makes for a steamy read as well. But mostly NEANDERTHAL had me laughing from and smiling the start with all the shenanigans between the Beckett family. And although this is the second installment in the series, I didn’t feel lost at all. Neanderthal is book #2 of the Last Man Standing series by Avery Flynn. It’s a standalone insta-love rom-com. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. I am leaving a voluntary review and all opinions are my own. Wow. That's pretty much all my brain will come up with right now. I am in such awe of this book that I don't even know where to start. I guess that I will start with craft because Avery Flynn sure knows her craft and knows it well. She can write a story that will reach deep down into you and mess with your wiring. She can dislodge things inside you that you didn't know could be reached. Her writing style is by far one of my favorites. Her writing is so polished and smooth and I fall so hard every single time I pick up one of her books. She is so clever in creating the plots of her stories and so talented at connecting all the dots. Her stories pull you in until you look up and realize that you missed supper and see that it's three in the morning. Her stories will engross you that much and it is worth it every single time. One of the things about this book in particular that has me all in a tizzy is that I felt such a deep personal connection to both main characters. I could chalk it up to coincidence that the female main character is a nerdy southern girl like me or that the male main character was a nerdy tattooed heartthrob, a combination that normally flicks all my switches, but it isn't just that the characters had such similarities to me and my preferences. Flynn really knows how to make her readers form a connection to her characters by giving them distinct personalities and excellent character growth. The book is also filled with secondary characters that add so much depth to the story. These are secondary characters that you form a connection with just as much as the main characters. Since many of Flynn's books and series take part in the same world, there are many character crossovers. I really loved the mentions and appearances of some of my favorite Flynn characters from other books. I am also silently wishing that some of the newer secondary characters will eventually get their own stories in Flynn's ever-growing Harbor City world. The romance in this book had one of the tropes that I absolutely cannot stand in romance novels. Yep, the dreaded instalove. That said, I still COULD NOT stop reading anyway. That is a testament to Flynn's writing because instalove is usually a hard no for me but she was able to engage me and make me believe in this romance. The hero may have fallen in love with the heroine instantly but he was able to back it up with how perfect she was for him. Not because of her looks, but because of her mind. And it's not like they fall into the sack right away declaring their undying love after just meeting. Griff has to work for it and show Kinsey just how much he cares about her. Instalove aside, Griff and Kinsey had amazing chemistry. It was clear to see that they were truly two peas in a pod. They complimented each other perfectly. Overall, this book blindsided me in all the best ways. I am hooked on Flynn's immersive brand of storytelling and I am so stoked for the last book in this series! If you are a romance fan that loves multi-dimensional characters, a compelling plot, and enough humor and steam to balance everything out then this is the book for you! In fact, any Flynn book is for you! Wet your toes with Flynn's unputdownable romcoms and never look back. BLOG FACEBOOK INSTAGRAM TWITTER BOOKBUB AMAZON PINTEREST

Rough summary Kinsey Dalton is anything but a dumb, air-headed bombshell blonde. If anything, she’s the complete opposite, something that other people, usually her peers and colleagues, don’t respect. Because all they see when they look at her blonde hair and big eyes, are her double assets, and immediately judge her to be a stereotypical blonde. In a way to be left alone, to not be stared and oggled at, to be respected in her field, Kinsey invented a make-believe fiancé. In a way to be left alone, to not be stared and oggled at, to be respected in her field, Kinsey invented a make-believe fiancé. Oddly, and disturbingly, enough this tactic worked. But when she moves to a new city for her dream job, her made-up fiancé all but stands in the way of what could truly be hers. Griff Beckett is not a talker, something everyone around him is already used to. He’s someone with a million and one hobbies to keep his never-still-never-quiet brain occupied. Griff is also someone who believes that relationships, love, wasn’t meant for him. So when love literally knocks him on his ass, he has no clue how or what to do about it. But truly, what can he do about the fact that the love of his life is engaged? The last man standing bet, the bet he has with his cousins to be the last person not in love, is now the least of his problems. Because what does it matter anymore when the only person he wants to be with, is already taken by someone else. Review This was my first ever book by Avery Flynn, and I’m happy to say that I enjoyed it as much as I hoped I would. At first, I was a bit surprised about it being written in third person, but the more I read, the more I appreciated that. The writing was spectacular, it was fun and attention-grabbing, and it sure as hell taught me a few new words (that I had to look up, just FYI). Plot related, everyone was terrific, at least in my humble opinion. This is a book about a man who didn’t believe he would ever fall in love, a man who made a bet with his cousins to see which one of them would be the last person to not be in love by the time Christmas comes around. One cousin down, two more to go. And this time, it’s Griff’s turn. I thought that the storyline was fun, maybe a little angsty when it comes to Kinsey’s work-situation, very laugh-out-loud-hilarious, oddly swoon-worthy, and most definitely sizzling hot. The relationship between bubbly, talkative Kinsey and grumpy, never-utters-a-single-word-and-only-grunts Griff was a beautiful thing to read about. It’s an insta-love story, one where the hero is the one to fall first, but also where the hero is clueless about how to win the heroine over. I’m not the biggest fan of insta-love, but this book gets all the love from me because of Griff Beckett. This man has barely spoken enough to fill even a sixth of this book, but I would still drop any and everything for him. He’s the sweetest and kindest kind of Neanderthal-hero, and he would seriously do anything for Kinsey. Kinsey I absolutely love. She’s determined, smart and very obviously passionate about what she does. At first, I kind of rolled my eyes at her when the whole you’re a mess conversation happened, but I grew to love this genius and sweet character the more I read about her. If there’s anyone you’d want to be friends with, if there’s anyone you’d want for support and encouragement, Kinsey would be your go-to-girl. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed this book, and will be recommending this to anyone who will listen to me. 5/5 grunts of approval from this Neanderthal-loving reader. I received an advanced review copy, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All thoughts and opinions are mine, which should be obvious from all the rambling. Thank you to the author and PR team for the opportunity to read and review Neanderthal by Avery Flynn. Here’s to many, many more!

But that isn’t because he’s cold hearted–he has feelings, a lot of them actually, he’s just learned to hide them well. But his feelings for Kinsey? They hit him like a train, and he never questions them. That was something I found compelling. As for Kinsey, she was a fascinating character–an extremely intelligent woman who looks like a Barbie doll and speaks like a bumpkin. Prejudices were at the heart of the story. It was a romance between two unexpected geniuses, one that looks like a bad boy, the other like a young Dolly Parton, the message being that only love and care helped with looking beyond the appearances. They each had their own voice, so each chapter was colored with their unique point of view and way of thinking, and it was delightful. The writing was that good. There could have been fewer repetitions though–no need to write another paragraph explaining Kinsey’s need for Todd, or Griff’s protectiveness with his sister. Of course, I’m curious about how Nash will end the bet, but I think I already found my favorite Beckett cousin, and his love story with Kinsey was both cute and hot. A lovely steamy romcom that I highly recommend. Griff is a man of few words but when he speaks, people tend to listen.

‘Neanderthal’ is a very breezy, light-hearted instalove type of story where a man not known for his words suddenly finds himself struck by lightning and discovering the woman he knows just *is* the one for him. The problem is? She’s not single (at least it’s what she says) and looks at him like dirt on her shoes because the first words out of his mouth upon meeting her come out as an insult. Griff Beckett knows he’s screwed himself royally and the road to get into Kinsey’s good books—the woman of his dreams, who just doesn’t know it yet—is one that’s less rocky than it looks to be. Both Kinsey and Griff are in some ways, socially awkward geeks in their own right, and with the twist coming in the form of Kinsey agreeing to go on dates with Griff after finding out about the pact he’d had with his family…it’s where things start taking off. ‘Neanderthal’ has that nice reverse (but somewhat bewildering) instalove where the male protagonist tries any means to get the woman to fall hard for him, almost akin to what certain male species in nature are designed to have—colourful plumage, prettier calls, etc, and that was something that I found myself wryly smiling at as Griff got into overdrive for that mission. Still, there is little diversion from the hallmarks of a rom-com and Griff/Kinsey’s story ends on a note that is happy but predictable. ***This happens rarely, but I had major formatting issues with the ARC I’d been given—the pages read from right to left, in that bizarre-ancient-writing way of reading and it took me a while to even get the flow, let alone rewire my brain to think that way. Needless to say, it wasn’t e-reader compatible and I ended up reading this on my laptop, which unfortunately, spoiled the whole experience. It’s normally an issue that I can ignore if the errors are minor, but this seemed significant to comment on it, which I did to the publishing representative, but didn’t receive a reply or a reformatted version in return. *ARC by the publisher via Netgalley

Well, she gave as good as she got. Her mind worked a mile a minute and she led a life where she always had to prove herself. She was up for a little fun even though it was with her competitor. What could possibly happen on six dates? What a fun couple Griff and Kinsey were. You never knew what was going to come out of Griff’s mouth (when he opened it) and what comeback Kinsey would have. The one thing that they could agree on was the chemistry between them when they finally gave in. Too bad they wouldn’t admit to their feelings until it was almost to late. I loved everything that went on this book. Even the little bit of drama that we have to have in order to get to a happily-ever-after. It was handled well and over in a minute. And, these two were definitely made for each other. Avery Flynn did a wonderful job bringing Griff from the grumpy Neanderthal that he was to the loving, caring man that was hidden beneath all that. All he needed was a loving woman who understood the way his mind worked and the pain that made him the way he was. And, she did this with a woman who had her own insecurities that she had to face. Together, they overcame everything, conquered their pasts and moved forward with their futures … the futures that they want. I loved Neanderthal and the story behind it all. Am I curious about what’s in the present? Sure. Do I have an idea? No way. It’s probably just an empty box … a set-up by Grandma Betty. I guess we will find out when Nash takes the fall. Or, knowing Avery Flynn, maybe not. That’s why I love the stories that Avery Flynn pens. You never know what she’ll throw at you … toilets, Lego’s, BBQ’s sauce. She’ll keep you on your toes and laughing throughout the whole story. Review copy provided for a voluntary review.

Neanderthal is the second book in Avery Flynn’s Last Man Standing series, and it’s a story I happily devoured in a single sitting. Although I enjoyed the first book, I enjoyed this one a lot more. My fingers are crossed the third book wows me even more. I adored the characters and could not get enough of the way their story was developing, turning page after page to see what came next. It was sweet and amusing, but it also hit with some hard truths. Without a doubt, this is a must-read for those who enjoyed the first book. There is plenty to enjoy with this one, and the promise of more with the next book.

"Forever. I've loved you forever." What a cute and fun rom com from Avery Flynn! I really enjoyed these two leads as they blended sweet and sass! I loved Griff so much- he was a little grumpy but also so sweet and it was amazing to see how head over heels he was for Kinsey. Kinsey took my just a bit longer to warm up to, but once I got to know her quirks and her insecurities, she really pulled at my heartstrings. These two danced around each other as part of the family bet, but I really loved the "Forever. I've loved you forever." What a cute and fun rom com from Avery Flynn! RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5 STEAM: 🔥🔥🔥 Neanderthal is the second book in the Last Man Standing series, and while there is an interconnection between the books, Avery Flynn does a great job in explaining the context to make this book a great standalone. Too bad, he got hit by one of the Love God's arrow before he even put up his Bramble account. Kinsey is new to the city life and is grateful that her best friend Morgan - who also happens to be Griff's sister - welcomes her with open arms and convinces her to share her apartment until she can stand on her own feet. She is, however, afraid that Morgan, whose family owns a top cosmetics company, is going to be upset that Kinsey is the new researcher for a rival and that Kinsey has also been keeping another secret. I don't think I have related any harder to any book character than Kinsey and Griff. I adore her solutions-oriented personality and penchant to talk a-mile-a-minute (which is what I tend to do when I am anxious). On the other hand, Griff is equally charming with a similar solutions-based approach and his grunt-as-a-response mode (which is what I also tend to do when I am NOT anxious). Their connection may have been insta-love, but the road to the spicy scenes was not as short and well paced. And boy, when we hit those parts, it is hot, hot, hot. I mean, is it surprising that a science genius is no stranger to female anatomy? #justsayin If you're looking for a great steamy rom-com read, I would highly recommend this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from Net Galley After reading Mama's Boy earlier this month, I was greedy to get my grubby digits on Neanderthal. I was already drawn to the big gruff scientist, Griff, and I knew the strong but silent hero would deliver in his book. I was already drawn to the big gruff scientist, Griff, and I knew the strong but silent hero would deliver in his book. Griff was my favorite out of the Last Man Standing trio and he brought a unique dynamic among his cousins. Our leading man was a fellow of few words, but he always made sure that whenever he did speak that those words meant something. It's only fair that his match came in the form of bright, bubbly Kinsey whose every word was delivered with a country twang. Neanderthal featured the loveliest case of Opposites Attract that I couldn't help but get the honey glow. Kinsey understood every grunt and grumble from Griff and he was happy to listen to her Southern accent for hours on end. This book also featured the Love at First Sight trope maxed to 11 because Griff got socked in the face by another boxer when he first spied Kinsey at the gym. He was immediately besotted and wanted to marry her as soon as possible. That was a very extreme reaction for me, but I suppose I'll take a dude whose totally committed from the get-go rather than the usual lukewarm heroes peppered throughout Romancelandia. Get yourself a big, buff scientist who's all in from day one, right? My only complaint was the amount of "cheese" served to me like it was an endless fondue of Gouda between the pages. Only a few elements of the story made me cringe while reading and it slightly detracted from the narrative . They went to a studio to learn Tik Tok dances, all of Griff's tattoos were science-related, and Kinsey used the most outlandish phrases that I've never heard in my own Southern family. I understand we're sticking to a theme, but I don't need her similes to be so southern-friend that they don't make sense. I like cheese as much as the next gal, but I don't want to be overwhelmed. Neanderthal made me feel warm and cozy inside because I saw myself reflected in the characters. Griff shared my introverted nature and Kinsey was my mirror image as a busty, blonde, Southern okra pod. It was wonderful to witness their courtship, even if it took a while for Kinsey to catch up to Griff's utter adoration. I was rooting for these two from the very beginning and it was lovely for them to find true love in between those caveman grunts. It looks like everyone can find love in the end, even a Neanderthal.

In order to decide which of the three gets to open the final Christmas gift from their deceased grandmother, they decide to go on six dates with the first person who responds to their online dating profile. If they can make sure they don’t fall in love in those six dates they will be the one who gets to open the present. Ok so this is really important… I fully acknowledge that the premise for this is nonsensical. It’s quite ridiculous. But let it me said that I very much enjoyed this book and just chose to ignore the insanity of the bet premise. Here’s what does matter about this book…let’s talk tropes! Fake dating, forced proximity, cinnamon roll hero (hard on the outside and squishy on the inside), grump to sunshine, insta-love These are some of my all time favorite tropes (minus the insta love). This book was a quick read. It was spicy (more for verbiage than content). I loved the couple. I liked the friendships in the periphery. I enjoyed the banter! Are heroine has some southern charm and hilarious southern phrases she uses throughout the book. Overall it was a quick and fun read! Things I didn’t vibe with: -The bet premise. - There was something else that I’m blanking on, but keep that in mind and I’ll update if I remember it later hahah Content warning: emotional abuse, workplace harassment. what you should listen to while reading: Song: The few things by JP Saxe ”I don't say what’s on my mind quite as much as you'd like me to I've been hearing that my whole life, I promise, it's not just you But I so confidently want you That when you say you're insecure about my feelings I don't take it serious But if you need me to tell you more You're one of the few things that I'm sure of You're one of the few things that I know already I could build my world of One of the few things that I'm sure of And I want you to unravel me Come closer, come closer Come closer, come closer” If you’re looking for a spicy romcom, pick up this book! I’m gonna go back and read the first book in the series! xoxo, dux

I love this series, it is light, funny and a quiet easy read. Griff is part of the bet, to be the last man standing (single) to win the last gift his grandmother left to him or one of his cousins before she died. He was planning on winning, however, that all changed when Kinsey entered the gym and completely took his breath away. Griff is such a sweetheart, even though he doesn't speak very much, he has so many layers that I loved getting to know! Kinsey is fun and determined. I loved her strong-willed manner, she has a point to make and she is determined to break the stigma of women working in the science industry. She wants to be taken seriously and she worked hard to get to where she is today. Usually, I wouldn't be a big fan of "insta love" romance, however, because Griff is in such a unique situation I was intrigued to see where their relationship would take them. I loved how he expressed himself with little or no words. Actions really do speak louder than words, and because of that, I really enjoyed this book. These characters were so unique, it was a pleasure to see them grow as a couple and individually. As this was a dual POV, I found it very beneficially to the reader to get a better understanding of their thoughts and feelings. Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend this series. It can be read as a standalone, however, to get a better understanding of the bet, I would recommend reading book number one. These two are hilarious because of the way in which they interact with each other. Mainly because they are both very self-conscious in the way they interact with people. Griff because his dad is a jerk who is a terrible father to both Morgan and Griff. I wish he got what was coming to him in the end, but he kind of scoots through his crappiness without any real repercussions. Kinsey because she is viewed as a blonde without brains when she is far from it. The dynamic between these two is wonderful once they get out of their own way, and I really ended up enjoying this book. And I can’t wait for book 3!!

Kinsey and Griff's story is sweet, light-hearted, and funny. I loved both of the characters, Griff and Kinsey. They're just so relatable and easy to love. It's even more fun with how Avery wrote their storyline. I loved how their story started and went. Seriously, these two have an instant connection. And they couldn't be any more perfect for each other. They get each other and are more similar than others. Then I loved Griff's family. Always loved when books have those!
