The story was initially featured in the Pets in Space 1 anthology under Spark of Attraction. The story has been revised with new material. The story will have a rescue mission carried out by the fleet of the Crimson Hawk, a warship. By the time they arrive at Verda Omega, there are only two hundred twelve survivors with over eleven hundred New Utopians perished—attacked by Tyranians. The story will have Captain Dante Stone assigning his second in command, Lieutenant Commander Lucille Brack, to head up the retrieval and getting the survivors situated. They will provide them with quarters, a mess hall, and they will be allowed access to the observation lounge. Guards will be posted to ensure they don’t go beyond those areas—medical will be available to them, and it will be weeks before they arrive at Space Station Outpost Fifteen (SSO15.) The Captain decides to visit the area with their guest to see how they are doing and will hear a dog barking—dogs are not allowed. When he confronts the owner, makes a threat against the dog, Sparky will assume the threat is against Miranda Lowell and bite Dante. He will learn that Sparky is a K9-500 bot but insists that he needs to be powered down during the flight duration. The story’s plot will have Miranda shocked when her roommate, Althea, goes missing, and then after several days, she shows back up completely disheveled, but Sparky tries to attack her and runs away. Then Miranda notices that several more rescued friends aren’t present, and they haven’t been seen. It will begin an inquiry, but something is still amiss. She will get the manifest, discover nine missing people, and bring it to the Captain’s attention. Miranda: Some New Utopians are missing Dante: Missing, how? What do you mean? Miranda: They’re gone. I haven’t seen them in days. Dante: There are 212 of you. It would be easy to overlook someone. Miranda: If I had trouble finding someone, I ask people they were close to, so I’m sure I’ve accounted for everyone. Dante: And you did this, why? Miranda: My cabin mate disappeared. Althea Withers and I shared quarters, but after a few days, she vanished. She returned briefly, but now she’s been gone for more than a week. I asked about her, but no one has seen her lately, and people have reported others missing. I knew I would need proof, so I obtained the manifest. The story is a mystery, suspense sci-fi that is a quick but fascinating read. Dante earned the name Stone Cold after a mishap during his nanotechnology left him emotionless—but a persistent young woman may turn that all around. It is also a sci-fi romance between a cyborg Captain and one of the New Utopians. What will happen if they take the leap and see what happens between them? “Could it be his helpfulness indicated a deeper personal interest? There had been moments when the chemistry seemed to sizzle between them. Or was she reading too much into his behavior because she was attracted to him and wished for her feelings to be reciprocated?” Miranda: Don’t say anything—bad. Dante: What would you consider bad? Miranda: Like we shouldn’t have done that Dante: We shouldn’t have. Kissing you was inappropriate, an abuse of my position. Miranda: I don’t feel abused, and I kissed you first. Dante: I should resist you, but I can’t. Miranda: I guess you don’t regret it now. Dante: Why would I regret it when you’re all I’ve been thinking about? The story’s mystery will be solved—but where will that leave Miranda and Dante? Will they dock at SSO15, and she goes, or can he convince her to stay—and her little dog too? “Had she decided he was too old, too cold, too machine-like, too warrior-like to love?”

Cara Bristol never ceases to make me smile with her stories, whether they be novella length or full-blown novels. I am always in for a good time with every read! While I definitely would have loved to see this drawn out a bit more, I really appreciated how much she was able to pack into such a tiny package. I loved the quirky characters, the adorable robotic dog, and then the unexpectedly gruesome mystery that was thrown at us halfway through. I'm hoping this world is built upon more soon - I have to say that I really loved the whole premise and would be eager to read more cyborg romance. Dante Stone is a cyborg commander of a military space fighter, given a brain that prevents him from feeling most emotions. So when he meets refugee archivist Miranda Lowell for the first time, the intense interest he has in her is...unexpected. Miranda was rescued along with 212 other survivors after their colony was attacked by a predatory alien species. A peaceful people with little to no weapons, they were virtually helpless until Dante's crew stepped in to help. Now on their way to safety, Miranda is starting to notice some of her people are disappearing. And the ones that aren't disappearing are beginning to act strange, like her roommate, who her robotic dog Sparky attacked when he usually is quite calm around her. Things are not what they seem on this spaceship, and it's up to Dante and Miranda to figure out what's going on, before more people disappear. My favorite part of this whole thing was probably Sparky, to be quite honest with you. I loved the romance, don't get me wrong, but I really, really want a robotic dog now. Not only was Sparky cute and fluffy, but was also an attack dog that basically saved the day in this story. Dogs are man's best friend, even if they're made of metal. Dante was a pleasant surprise, as I was expecting him to be a lot more difficult to warm up to. However, he was so adorable in his eagerness to mend things with Miranda and make sure she felt for him the same way he felt for her. There was definite steam in this story, and as I mentioned before, I would have loved to see the whole book longer. Particularly because I have a feeling the sex here would have been H-O-T, if we had the time for it. Things were wrapped up quite neatly in the end, but I do still hope for more stories with cyborgs at some point. **I received a free copy from the author and this is my honest review.**

Stone Cold Cyborg is full of suspense as crew members go missing on a warship while their cyborg captain tangles with a clever archivist and her canine companion. I'm a sucker for cyborgs so I'm predisposed to like Dante. He's a cold, analytical cyborg but with Miranda he's a different man. With her, he feels again and he's more human and less cyborg. I like that Dante is dedicated and devoted to his role as captain of his warship, but at the same time, he has enough feeling left in him to want more from life that is just service and not feeling. I like that he grabbed hold of Miranda and didn't let go. Miranda is clever and observant. She's smart enough to know when something is not quite right on board the warship and goes to Dante with her suspicions. I also love that she's devoted to Sparky, her little robotic pet, even though he's only a doggie robot. Sparky is pretty cute and savvy for a robotic animal, and he does save the day when things go awry with the aliens who are causing problems on the ship. This was a fun short story. It's got romance and mystery, a cute puppy and a hunky cyborg. That's a winning combination for me. I am partial to Ms Bristol's cyborg stories. See more from Deanna's World

Stone Cold Cyborg is a stand alone sci-fi romance. It was initially released in the Pets in Space 1 collection, but has been expanded. Dante knows rules and regulations, but not emotions or how to connect with others. When his crew rescues some colonists, he’s oddly drawn to Miranda. When she comes to him with news of missing colonists, he’s not sure what to believe, but will her robot dog be the key to their future? Oh my goodness, I thought this novella was so good! I loved Dante and Miranda, loved their connection and loved that they could both find peace and happiness with each other, even after all of the loss they’ve faced. Dante is not good at emotions and definitely takes all logical routes, so it was pretty fun when he couldn’t explain why he wanted to have Miranda close to him at all times. He’s a protector, believes in the power of his word, and I liked him. Miranda is also pretty logical, but she definitely cares for those around her and I liked her character a lot, too! While this book was a novella, I was flipping pages, trying to figure out what was going to happen next, both with the main characters and with the developing drama and danger! If I had one complaint, it would be that I wish this book was developed a little more, maybe made the connection between Dante and Miranda flow a little better or perhaps deeper, but I loved this book! It was great to escape into and I’ve missed Ms. Bristol’s cyborgs!

Miranda, the human female lead, is part of a group of humans rescued by Dante’s military spaceship from a planet that has been attacked by other shapeshifting aliens. Dante, the male lead, has been a cyborg for so long that he has functionally forgotten what emotions felt like. I loved this book! Dante was so sweet with Miranda while still trying to be the captain of the ship and Miranda is scarred from what she's experienced on her planet but she's still strong and willing to stand up when she knows something isn't right. I loved the story kept me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. The only thing is I wished it was longer! It was such a fun story. I loved this book! Stone Cold Cyborg begins when Captain Dante Stone and his ship answers the distress call of colonists under attack by an alien force. They have taken aboard a little over two hundred battered and starved survivors. He is the last person who should be interacting with the group since everyone finds him cold and intimidating. It doesn't help when he thinks a colonists has defied orders and brought her pet aboard and the dog bites him thinking Dante is threatening his human. Turns out 'Sparky' is a dog bot and Miranda sparks feelings in him that he didn't think he was capable of feeling. Miranda was scared the big, angry captain would space Sparky after he bit him, but then realizes the man has more to him than his reputation would have others believe. He's a protector and a good commander. If only their time together wasn't limited to how long it took for them to reach the spaceport. But, first, she has to convince him that something weird is going on when colonists are turning up missing. This was a quick read, but developed well. It gets right into matters and it was riveting from start to finish. I enjoyed seeing the sizzle of attraction between Dante and Miranda, scenes with Sparky the AI, and that was a wonderful twist and surprise climax and then finish. Definitely recommend for those who want a one-sitting sci-fi romance. My thanks to the author for the opportunity to read the eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Dante and Miranda I love this terrific blend of cyborg, human, science fiction romance, mystery, and pets. It is short, sweet, and I wanted to see more of what happens in the next chapter. He's not enturelys what to do with himself or how to handle them. So cute to see the bossy man at a loss. Is something happening on his ship though, maybe he needs Miranda's help to find out? That a maybe just a bit more?

This was a “who done it” little bit of mystery taking place in space with a very cute and protective cyborg doggie, who didn’t quite steal the show. I enjoyed this short story by author Cara Bristol which I found very imaginative and original. The writing was good, the pacing was smooth the narrative engaging with a few made me smile moments. He is immediately drawn to Miranda Lowell archivist of the colony when they meet which causes him some reflection as after all cyborgs don’t feel emotions, right? Not in this story which for a short read was totally enjoyable and didn’t need the hot bedroom scenes to stand out for me! I reviewed "Stone Cold Cyborg" by Cara Bristol. This story is part of the Pets in Space 6. Dante is the Captain of Crimson Hawk a warship. Dante is also a Cyborg and because he shows no emotion his crew calls him Stone Cold. His ship and crew saved two hundred and twelve humans from a massacre on New Utopians. He meets Miranda who is the archivist for New Utopia. But the dog is a bot/not a real animal. Now Dante and Miranda are attracted to each other and doing their best to keep everything professional. There is some action, drama, murders, killing aliens, passion, romance and love. I received a copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Dante is intensely attracted to Miranda even though he is a cyborg and has never felt this way before. When people start disappearing and then showing up dead, Miranda looks for an answer. The book has great pace, intense chemistry and steam, and a fast action packed read. Solid Read I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Miranda and Dante have a rocky beginning. He's in charge of rescuing her and her fellow New Utopian colonists from a Tyranian invasion. He's a cyborg, who's lost his emotions, so when he meets Miranda and suddenly feels an instant attraction, he's surprised. But before he can even really approach her he tries to take her only lifeline, her dog Sparky. Short, Sweet, and Satisfying Sci-Fi! As a fan of Ms Cara Bristol, I do enjoy winding my way through her Series. This little morsel was originally published in an anthology and now is giving her readers an opportunity to taste a sample of her Sci-Fi Chops. As always, she is a fantastic storyteller. Although a quick read, this novella is no different than her other stories; wonderful character development, with a story-arc that you don’t see coming. Even better, we get an easy-build love story that gives you the “feels”, but no heat. I sure hope we get another chance to explore Dante and Miranda’s love story further. I do have a soft spot for Cyborgs. I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
