Poetry brings out the depths of the soil, it heal trauma and expresses not only through words but through the rhythm. Many situations, rights and wrongs, are expressed through a variety of poems, each accompanied by an illustration. The presentation is appealing, the poems are flowing with feeling, this was well to read. I especially like the poems "Never Alone" and "Boxed". I received this through a goodreads giveaway and I appreciate the opportunity to read this. Thank you. I received an ARC copy of Lilac Bush through Reedsy in exchange for an honest review. There is a lovely cadence to Pamela Nwokeji’s first collection, Lilac Bush. Written by Nwokeji as a therapeutic aid for her own healing, and as an example to others in her community, there is an obvious purpose to these poems. In a hundred-page collection, Nwokeji has a lot of space to explore her themes and the ones most important to her are strikingly pervasive. There is a lovely cadence to Pamela Nwokeji’s first collection, Lilac Bush. In a hundred-page collection, Nwokeji has a lot of space to explore her themes and the ones most important to her are strikingly pervasive. Each poem is also paired with a beautiful digital graphic, also by Nwokeji, executed in a style that lands somewhere between the clean lines of early 20th century art deco, and the brilliant colors of late 20th century modernism. When it comes to art, Nwokeji has a flair all her own that is truly breathtaking in its evocation of the delightful, the terrible, and the hopeful. As for her writing, Nwokeji’s work revels in the specifics of her Boston upbringing. Place poems like “Kensington Street” and “Boulevard Wall” stand out as bright, tangible pieces of verse towards the middle of the collection. Likewise, the broken heartbeat of “Through a Child’s Eyes”, about the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. is an incredibly poignant tribute to that April evening in 1968. Obviously intended for a Black readership, but accessible to all, Pamela Nwokeji sought to share something deeply personal when she chose to publish this collection. Her stated intention is that this book start conversations that have gone unvoiced for too long and in that, I pray she succeeds.

Be Prepared This book of poems gives a rather hard look at African American culture, struggles and pride. Overall a good collection of poetry that tell a story. I would definitely recommend to youth between the ages of 14-25.

Nwokeji, is a powerful and beautiful work that is socially relevant and culturally impactful. Using lilacs as the theme to guide the poetic nature of the book, you will experience hard times, confusion, and pain, but also hope and inner power--right along with the poet. Enlightenment and change can't happen without growth and challenge, but the resulting transformation is worth it. These poems can help light the way toward healing and meaningful changes. Nwokeji brings an intimate feel to the poetry from deep emotion and firsthand experience. She knows all too well what it means to live in the world of Black America. Writers like this bring insight and clarification to social injustices that are happening now but can also serve as clarion calls to future generations. I like how the poems actually offer concrete solutions, like education, family, and faith in God. Sometimes the language is strong and the material is uncomfortable, but the points do get across. The honesty in this work is appreciated, and so is the beauty. This writer seems to have a gift for poetry, phrasing, and conveying thoughts we have but can't always express. Readers who have dealt with abuse, self-harm, mental health diagnoses, and racism will connect with this volume. I love the themes of community, improvement, advocacy, and healing that this book conveys, and think the messages come from a place of true yearning on the author's part. One of my favorite poems is "Grandma's Art Dresser", with which I connected strongly. Some poems are more personal; some more social--but all make an impression. Colorful images also help convey the book's ideas, and the resource links at the end are nice. If you like poetry that could possibly change the world, you will love Lilac Bush: A Poetic Journey and Cultural Awakening for Future Generations, by Pamela C. Nwokeji."
