I gave this book a 5 star rating because it has well-written information on nutrition for gut and heart health, is well organized for the reader to use, and overall has some truly great recipes! While there were a number of recipes that I passed on because they called for sugar or were for meat eaters, I found that Liz and Cynthia have some wonderful combinations of food ingredients that I have never thought of before. For instance, I tried the avocado with mango for the Mango Surprise. For instance, I tried the avocado with mango for the Mango Surprise. Including the avocado is a great way to add some nutrient density to the smoothie and it was delicious. I also tried their Asparagus Frittata and will definitely be making that one again. There again, I had never thought to cook asparagus as an omelet. Turned out so fluffy and tasty! I ignored the "diet" parts of this book but it has some decent nutrition information and delicious recipes. Easy to follow. Easy to modify. I will definitely be trying as many as I can. This cookbook focuses on MUFAs (Mono Unsaturated Fatty Acids)and how they help reduce dangerous belly fat. There is a 4-day jump start for the diet, that seemed like it cut out a lot of foods that would be seemingly good for you and has you drink something called sassy water before each meal. The sassy water is regular water that contains ginger, lemon, cucumber, and mint. I did not see an explanation as to why you would put all that stuff in your water. The sassy water is regular water that contains ginger, lemon, cucumber, and mint. I did not see an explanation as to why you would put all that stuff in your water. I also didn't see an explanation for drinking a full glass at every meal, but have the idea of a glass of water before eating mentioned before in other resources. (Drink a glass of water before a meal 1) to reduce the amount you eat because the water helps to fill you up, 2) thirst sometimes feels like hunger, so a glass of water may take care of the hunger issue, and 3) the water helps you stay hydrated). Anyway, as someone who hates flavored water, I just can't see myself drinking a glass of water with all that crap in it. Just give me plain old boring water. Other than that, a lot of the recipes sound pretty good and I understand the concept of 4 meals of 400 calories throughout the day (every 4 hours-ish) and the idea of having a MUFA at every meal. I was a little surprised at where some of the MUFAs come from (chocolate & peanut butter! YUM!) and at some of the combinations (avocado in a mango smoothie?) but I think overall, it just might be a doable diet (if I can get past the water thing).

I'm currently meal planning from this book and truly it is pretty good as far as diet cookbooks go. I have enjoyed one gimmick from the plan which is to make a batch of flavoured water every day (lemon, cucumber, mint) and this one habit has truly helped me to drink much more water during the day than I ever have previously. Additional recipes are very very easy, and because the premise is to never eat more than 400 calories per meal, the dishes are well balanced and satisfying. I have lost weight from the book, 2 lbs and counting. I really didn't give it five stars because I think the title is silly and some of the jargon in the book is off putting. Recipes of note: Salmon burger Jerk chicken salad Tuna salad Lentil goat cheese salad

confession time. I did the 4 day jump-start on a recommendation from a yoga instructor. The sassy water all combined is disgusting, but each individual component on it's own is fine. I can't say I'll continue everything in the book forever, but the concept isn't the worst out there, and frankly, the jump-start DID help me re-evaluate portion sizes and actually "think" about what was going in my mouth and why. I'd do it again. It was tough for sure, but anyone can do anything for 4 days if I made confession time. I did the 4 day jump-start on a recommendation from a yoga instructor. I can't say enough about this diet. I am never hungry and never seem to obsese on food like I did on Weight Watchers. The recipes in this cook book are great. Even for other members in the household who are not on the "diet" with me. They are even choosing recipes from the book for the evening meal! I can't say enough about this diet. I just don't do diets, but am very interested in cooking healthier, and this is a great book for new recipes and ideas - without all kinds of weird ingredients that you can't even pronounce, let alone figure out where to buy. We have enjoyed several new dishes inspired by these recipes, and the pictures look so good we want to make more. Highly recommend it! I find recipe books frustrating. I usually don't ever make the recipes because I'm such a picky eater. And because I'm lazy. I don't want elaborate recipes with bunches of ingredients. I want quick and easy. But I'm trying to get back on the flat belly diet. I did a month, then took a month off; now try for another month...maybe another 2-3 pounds off. This is a great cookbook! Even if you are not following the actual diet, the recipes are simple and balanced, and a serving equals just about 400 calories!
