In a career spanning more than two decades, U2 has become one of the most popular rock acts in the world, commanding both critical adulation and huge commercial success. And U2's guiding light is undoubtedly front man Bono, a fascinating and multifaceted star, equally at home conversing with the Pope about Third World debt or taking center stage at the Grammys. Bono's impassioned songwriting and talent for reinvention have enabled U2 to triumph over every challenge and remain at the forefront of rock, while never compromising artistic vision or integrity. Born Paul David Hewson in Dublin, Ireland, Bono teamed up with Larry Mullen, Adam Clayton, and Dave Evans (later known as the Edge) when all four attended the same high school in Dublin. In this insightful biography, Laura Jackson traces Bono's life from those Dublin roots to his current status as international rock icon. She explores the band's musical journey from its 1980 debut album, Boy, through to the global triumph of 2001's Elevation tour, and tracks Bono's evolution into an intensely charismatic and powerful performer. Bono: His Life, Music, and Passions also delves behind the scenes to reveal Bono's nonmusical aspirations and inspirations. Whether speaking out against apartheid, nuclear testing, or in his role as spokesman for the Jubilee 2000 project (now Drop the Debt), Bono has become an ardent advocate for political and personal causes. In the process he's earned the respect of world leaders such as former president Bill Clinton and UN Secretary Kofi Annan, traveled to Africa on a fact-finding tour with U.S. Treasury Secretary PaulO'Neill, and been hailed by Q Magazine as the most powerful figure in the music industry. Despite the trappings of fame and fortune, Bono remains devoted to his wife, Ali, and their children, and maintains a unique connection with his fans. Here's a chance to see beyond the public persona to the remarkable man beneath--generous, genuine, shrewd, passionate, and the most intriguing and individual rock star of our times.

The major theme of the book is staying true to yourself and not letting your ego of being a superstar destroy who you are as a person or your values. I would recommend this book to anyone because of its insight and focus on how to become a better person, regardless of your position in life. The book covers the life of Bono, the lead singer of U2, and how his band mates evolve into the good people they are today. “Being in a rock band at a young age and at the same time attending private religious prayer and confession sessions laid them right open to the risk of ridicule (page 23).” Even when they became superstars and could have anything they wanted, Bono and his band members still maintained a close relationship with God. Another example of when the band showed their true colors was at a nuclear processing plant off the British Coast. It was polluting the body of water between England and Ireland. Bono started a concert named Greenpeace to raise awareness for the crisis. “The concert, unambiguously billed as ‘Greenpeace’, supported a lineup that included Big Audio Dynamite 2 and Public Enemy” (page 120).” Bono set this up this show support and raise money for the environment and his home country Ireland. This is one of many reasons Bono is one of the greatest humanitarians in the world of music. Bono and his band have done very selfless things for the world we live in today. Whether it’s him growing in his Christian faith or raising awareness for global pollution that affects his country or others, they have always helped out. In my final judgment I think Bono has given great advice for his followers of all ages and I hope he doesn’t stop making great music. This book is a well written, quick-read for those interested in Bono and his band U2.

It feels great to read about the best moments on one of rock music's biggest stars and one of the most passionate activists in the world. Through his stages of music and entertainment, Bono has always encouraged and inspired people to follow in his legacy. I would highly recommend this book for eager musicians because those who love U2 really love it and it still continues to be one of my favorites!
